This book is my companion for life

You will never find a better book on linear algebra and calculus! The beauty of this book is that it makes no distinction between the topics and has very clear explanations. Problems and the end of chapters make you prove results that will blow your mind (stuff from physics, other branches of mathematics, etc.). I keep coming back to it whenever I forget things. This book replaces a library!

Certainly Teilhard has meant for me too much at the point that when I write or say anything about him I just do what he said:

"As the result of the awakening in me of the notion of Evolution, Spirit(As I have just related) had, in my view, supplanted the Mineral and the Atomic in their dignity as the immutable and the all-embracing essence of the Universe. But as this Spirit, vaguely conceived as some sort of opposite pole to the physicist's Energy, was still, in my mind(and was so to remain for a long time) without any precise structure: two innate and obstinate prejudices prevented me from facing and coming in terms with the fact(obvious though it was) that if the World does indeed represent an organo-dynamic system which is in process of psychic interiorization, then it is through the Flesh, by process of Hominization, that Noogenesis operates."

Of course Hominization and Noogesis are some of the main pilars of Evolution: the evolution of Man and the Evolution of the Noos, a greek word that can mean for us, either mind or spirit.

And there you have a beautiful mind that solved the great problem of mankind since Galileo, I mean, the problem between Science and Religion, from the very within of Catholicism, something that I really have never understood: how he could do it!

Ciertamente Teilhard ha significado mucho para mí, al punto que cuando hablo o escribo sobre él, simplemente lo cito:

"Como consecuencia del despertar en mí de la noción de Evolución, el Espíritu(como acabo de decir) había suplantado a mis ojos al Mineral y a lo Atómico en su dignidad de esencia inalterable y envolvente del Universo. Pero este Espíritu, concebido vagamente a la manera de una suerte de antípoda de la Energía del físico, permanecía - y permanecería largo tiempo- para mí sin estructura precisa: dos prejuicios innatos y tenaces me disuadían de mirar de frente, y asimilar, el hecho (bastante claro, sin embargo de que, aunque el Mundo represente verdaderamente un sistema órgano-dinámico en vías de interiorización psíquica, es a través de la Carne, por la vía de la Hominización, como se opera la Noogénesis."

Desde luego la Hominización y la Noogénesis, algunos de los pilares principales de la Evolución: la evolución del hombre y la evolución de la Noos, una palabra griega que puede significar mente e espíritu.

Y ahí tenemos una Mente Brillante que resolvió el gran problema de la humanidad desde Galileo, quiero decir, el problema entre la Ciencia y la Religión desde muy adentro del Catolicismo, ¡algo que realmente nunca he entendido como pudo hacerlo!

I found Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's THE HEART OF MATTER to be fascinating, and mystically satisfying. His ideas about evolution, the living, thinking Earth, the noosphere, and the universal Christ are astonishing! The noosphere is particularly interesting, featuring mankind w/ one collective mind, while retaining individuality. A race evolving toward its ultimate destiny, unable to be thwarted by the madness of human life, even war. In fact, Teilhard's greatest epiphany came to him while he was fighting in World War One! This section, written during the fierce insanity of battle, is incredibly astute and enlightening. To Teilhard, our planet is a rocky skeleton, covered by biological life, and made sentient by the arrival of man. Though Teilhard passed away many years before its invention, one can only wonder what he would have thought of the internet! It seems to fulfill many of the very things he wrote about so prolifically! Highly recommended to the seeker of more challenging spiritual material, as well as those looking for something completely out of the ordinary...

Exploring Advice - A Must-Read, Especially for Financial Planners.

As someone who delivers hundreds of financial plans in a year and uses MGPro/Finametrica, I found this book a great read. It goes deeper into who a fiduciary should be. It gets under the skin of it and examines the emotional thread that runs between and ties numbers together. The interviews are conversational, practical. The book represents how financial plans and fiduciary actions go together to help clients reach financial life benchmarks. This work is an honorable effort and worth a read from professionals on the front lines and seeking to be fiduciaries. This is the future. Kevin's book should be a foundational read for the new world.

About the Author

Susan Sullivan is currently Chair of the Department of Education at the College of Staten Island (CSI), City University of New York (CUNY) where all undergraduate and graduate education programs are under the direction of the Chair. Previously, she was the Chair of the Education Department for six years. She continues to teach post master’s courses in supervision of instruction and educational leadership in the Department leadership program. She is co-principal investigator on an NSF grant that supports the Teacher Education Honors Academy and is a founder of the CSI High School for International Studies. In addition, she is currently planning a leadership program for Chinese school administrators.

Her continued research interests center on supervision of instruction and its alternatives, reflective practice, and the role of leadership and supervision of instruction, in particular, in school transformation, themes on which she continues to write journal articles. In addition to the third edition of Supervision that Improves Teaching and Learning: Strategies and Techniques, she and Jeffrey Glanz have coauthored a staff development book, Supervision in Practice, and are the authors of Building Effective Learning Communities.

Jeffrey Glanz currently serves as a Senior Fellow at the Institute for University-School Partnership, Director of the Masters Program and the Raine and Stanley Silverstein Chair in Professional Ethics and Values at the Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration at Yeshiva University. Prior to coming to YU, Dr. Glanz served as Dean of Graduate Programs and Chair of the Department of Education at Wagner College in Staten Island, New York. He also coordinated the educational leadership program that led to New York State certification as a principal and assistant principal. Prior to arriving at Wagner, he served as executive assistant to the president of Kean University in Union, New Jersey. Dr. Glanz held faculty status as a tenured professor in the Department of Instruction and Educational Leadership at Kean University’s College of Education. He was named Graduate Teacher of the Year in 1999 by the Student Graduate Association and was also that year’s recipient of the Presidential Award for Outstanding Scholarship. He served as a teacher and assistant principal in the New York City public schools. He has conducted numerous workshops and seminars internationally. Dr. Glanz has authored, coauthored, and co-edited 20 books and has many peer-reviewed article publications.

Great for administrators and teachers!

I bought this book for a class I am taking for my doctorate. This book is a must for all educators. The book gives you practical information about collaborating with others. There are several different models and many examples within this book. There are also videos that go along with each model to show examples.

Current thinking for school administrators

This text, required for a UTB graduate course in Supervision, will change the way principals think and function as an instructional leader in their schools. Gone are the days of the once-a-year trauma of the "evaluation visit" that stressed out the teachers. Now, principals encourage collaboration among professional educators, and all work together to improve student learning. It's about time!

Too much of a soap opera

The first two chapters of A Man's Woman are absolutely riveting. An arctic expedition team, after failing to reach the North Pole, marches across the jagged and shifting ice, struggling southward in hopes of meeting with a rescue ship. Their own ship having been crushed by the encroaching ice, they trudge through the wind-scoured wasteland, as sled dogs drag their lifeboats toward some elusive stretch of open water. Over the course of months of endless toil and incredible suffering, members of the party fall prey to frostbite, starvation, and disease. Author Frank Norris captures this experience in vivid naturalistic detail. This is not Jack London's frozen North, idealized in its beauty, power, and glory. This is a gritty and gruesome reality, where brave and hardy men are reduced to less than animals. In his depiction of the tragic ordeal, Norris provides a gripping drama that keeps his audience firmly rooted to the edge of their seats.

A Man's Woman, first published in 1900, is not a novel of arctic adventure, however. It is a story of what happens to the survivors after they return to civilization. The book's primary focus is a love story between two strong-willed and career-driven characters. It examines the question of how much two individuals can compromise their lifestyles and personalities for the sake of their relationship, without totally losing themselves in the process.

As is characteristic of Norris--the chief American practitioner of literary Naturalism--the many sights, sounds, and smells of the story are catalogued with a detail and authenticity that rivals reality itself. The thought processes of the characters are transcribed with equal thoroughness and with great psychological insight. The story, however, is far more melodramatic than one expects from Norris. Each scene seems so calculated to be emotionally manipulative that the overall effect is off-putting. The whole book revolves around one extremely overwrought central scene in which the male and female leads exhibit behavior that is both irrational and unrealistic. Throughout the novel, the plot elements are quite predictable. At the start of each chapter the reader can easily see where he's being led, which inspires a feeling of impatience at being forced to sit through pages of interior monologue, the end result of which is a foregone conclusion. As usual, Norris's mastery at establishing setting and mood is evident in this novel, but the story he tells does not do justice to the world he has created.

Frank Norris never wrote a bad novel in his life (though he did write some bad short stories). Of the seven novels he completed during his all-too-brief career, however, one of them has to be his worst, and this is it. Diehard fans of Norris will nonetheless recognize moments of characteristic genius here. Casual readers investigating this great American novelist would be better served by reading his masterpieces The Octopus and McTeague. Though not a terrible novel by any means, A Man's Woman is the Norris novel least worthy of reading.

a quality read

I fell in love with Lloyd and Barrett and just thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. It is well written, and borrowed it for free with my Amazon Prime. I often find free reads to be worth less than even that lol... but I enjoyed this one like a breath of fresh air!

VALERIE L. WINSLOW has been painting and drawing the human figure for more than three decades and is an expert in the field of figurative art. She is the author ofClassic Human Anatomy and has taught at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, the California Institute of the Arts, and Pixar Animation Studios. She is currently a full-time faculty member and the anatomy coordinator at San Francisco's Academy of Art University. Many of her works are in private collections, and she has won numerous museum awards.

A bridge between theory and practice

This is an excellent companion to the author's previous book, 'Classic Human Anatomy'. While the previous book focuses on detailed anatomy information, this book has more on applying anatomy in drawing the figure. I really like the chapters on landmarks, planes/structure, and movements with lots of nuggets of information that enable you to depict the human figure convincingly. The chapter on gesture drawing explains 8 different gesture drawing styles which will be particularly helpful for beginning and experienced artists alike.

There's some overlapped anatomy contents between the 2 books, but 'Classic Human Anatomy in Motion' gives you better overview of joints, bones, and muscles besides further information on movements. For example, there is an in-depth discussion on face muscles in various facial expressions. Plus extra drawings and diagrams provide different views (front, side, 3/4) of anatomical parts in motion.

The book is well designed with beautiful and colorful drawings on quality paper.

In short, 'Classic Human Anatomy' is anatomy-in-theory. 'Classic Human Anatomy in Motion' is anatomy-in-practice. Applying anatomy in drawing the human figure requires patience and effort in building knowledge and getting better with proper practice. The author has done a great job with both books.

Penguin Random House Book Review: Classic Human Anatomy in Motion

Valerie L. Winslow, fine award winning artist, Pixar Studios animation educator, as well as over thirty years teaching figurative art and artistic anatomy, published a profound 304 page hardcover illustrated volume, Classic Human Anatomy in Motion: The Artists Guide to the Dynamics of Figure Drawing.

This volume speaks to the creative and medical aspects of human anatomy. The book is sectioned, allowing the reader to digest the authentic mechanics of the human body. In each section and nearly all pages, there are distinct illustrations of the body part, ranging from bones to ligaments to muscle to tendons to skin to facial structures. Such elements are crucial to understand when creating a piece of art intended to be realistic and anatomically correct.

Browsing through the pages, the reader is able to stop wherever they please, not following a designed study pattern, more so, a creative one. One can start at the beginning or open any page and begin. This is only one important aspect of this book when speaking of creativity.

The chapters are easy to read, not scientific or medical in nature, and a student of anatomy as well as art will find this volume most useful. Valerie's understanding of the human body and all structures and movements involved is quite astounding.

If one wishes to all create all facial structures, it is here and if one wishes to be able to create motion and realistic muscles beneath skin that is also in this artistically designed book from front to back covers.

As an artist and a student of medicine, this volume bewilders me. It is not only a book every artists needs to own, but a book ripe with extensive medical knowledge of the entire human body and all it encompasses. The illustrations range from a simple charcoal sketch of a woman standing to an extensive anatomical medical model of the same figure.

To test the practicality of this book, I began sketching with pencil and simply opened to a chapter on muscles. In less than 10 minutes, I already drew the upper body of a male figure outlined, half of it sketched, muscles showing, with basic curves of the body outlined in accurate depth and volume.

I have never done that in my life.

Included is what I created from reading only one page of this book.

This is an artist’s dream. I cannot imagine being without this volume.

Excellent information for human figure artists

"Classic Human Anatomy in Motion" is an anatomy book for artists who draw, paint, or sculpt human nudes. Much of the information can be applied to clothed figures, too, which is how I intend to use it. I appreciated that the nude figures were treated respectfully (rather than shown in sexually suggestive poses) and really were anatomically accurate.

This book contained many high-quality illustrations. Many of the illustrations showed the bones and muscles of the human body as you'd find them in an anatomy book. The author also pointed out which features can be seen on the surface and to look for them as reference points when drawing. She described the motions that each joint can do and how muscles work, so you can more realistically render the human body when it's in motion. To quote the book description, "each chapter builds an artistic understanding of how motion transforms the human figure."

Rather than having the reader repeat her drawings as exercises, the author described how to draw the figure you are interested in (from models, everyday life, pictures, or video). She suggested warm-up exercises and ways to suggest an active (rather than passive) figure. She gave some advice about working from your imagination, but she generally assumed that you'll have some reference to draw from as you work.

It has helped me understand how to apply that knowledge to my art. Overall, I'd recommend this book to artists who want to improve their depictions of human figures.

My Son Carried This Around

My 8yo son carried this book around with him. Even slept with it! He had his nose stuck in it, occasionally looking up to tell me a joke but mostly just enjoying giggling at the humor that is perfect for the older elementary set. Kids don't realize that reading this book is helping them improve their language skills. I loved this book and recommend it highly as a gift for a kid in your life. And it's the perfect size to fit in a Christmas stocking.

Definitely not short on chuckles

This joke book is definitely a contender for Most Popular Joke Book of the Year. Yes, it has some "groaners" but those are what the kids like the most! The humor is clean, imaginative, and suitable for kids as well as adults. I enjoyed it very much and I'm not much of a joke book reader, but I find myself still remembering the chuckles even when I have now forgotten the punchlines! I wish my grandson was 9 instead of 5 so that I could tickle his funnybone!

My 7 year old son loves this book. Yes, the jokes are corny but this book is directed towards children.
My son really likes the jokes. It's hilarious watching him laughing after he read the jokes. He thinks I'm laughing at the jokes when I'm really laughing at him.
