About the Author

Peter G. Northouse, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Communication in the School of Communication at Western Michigan University. In addition to publications in professional journals, he is the author of Leadership: Theory and Practice (now in its seventh edition) and Introduction to Leadership: Concepts and Practice (now in its third edition) and coauthor of Health Communication: Strategies for Health Professionals (now in its third edition). His scholarly and curricular interests include models of leadership, leadership assessment, ethical leadership, and leadership and group dynamics. For more than 30 years, he has taught courses in leadership, interpersonal communication, and organizational communication to both undergraduate and graduate students. Currently, he is a consultant and lecturer on trends in leadership research, leadership development, and leadership education. He holds a doctorate in speech communication from the University of Denver, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in communication education from Michigan State University.

The book was well written and easy to follow. For an introductory book, it covered the concepts well. The activities and reflective questions at the end of the chapters help to bring the concepts within the chapter to a personal relevance.

As many as one in eight women have a thyroid condition. In Living Well with Hypothyroidism, Mary Shomon outlines the most common of these--too little thyroid hormones in the body. Weight gain, depression, fatigue, and what patients call "brain fog, Brillo hair, and prune skin" result. Because the symptoms of hypothyroidism mimic so many other conditions--chronic fatigue, PMS, clinical depression--it can be very tricky to diagnose, especially since patients with HMOs may not get the thorough testing they need.

Shomon knows of what she speaks: she's a health writer and thyroid patient herself. She also manages a thyroid Web site and writes a newsletter on hypothyroidism. In Living Well, she offers an extensively researched guide to this complex condition. She covers conventional, alternative, and late-breaking approaches to treatment--such as challenging the gold standard of Synthroid as the thyroid replacement therapy of choice. (Synthroid replaces T4, the less active of the two thyroid hormones, and Shomon features new research on adding T3--the more potent thyroid hormone--to treatment.)

With her down-to-earth, patient-centered approach, Shomon explains everything from how to choose a thyroid specialist to how calcium, antidepressants, and a high-fiber diet affect thyroid hormone absorption. The book includes a chapter on depression, which is a typical misdiagnosis of hypothyroidism--as well as a symptom that often persists even after treatment. She also covers infertility (women who are hypothyroid don't ovulate as regularly and miscarry more frequently) and thyroid cancer, one of the less common causes of hypothyroidism. She explains how to spot hypothyroidism in kids, and ends with a glossary, international resources, and journal references.

Shomon creates a sense of community by excerpting e-mails from her vast network of patients--voices that bring a sense of humor so often missing from health books. Mary Shomon's book is nothing less than a miracle for the millions across the USA who suffer from hypothyroidism. If you have a doctor who diagnosed you and gave you no more information about your disease than scribbling a prescription, order this book TODAY. There is hope!
I am only sorry that I wasn't able to get this book several years and two doctors ago, because I would have been able to take a much more active part in my health care.
There is also a large appendix of resources for thyroid disease sufferers in the back of the book that is worth the purchase price alone.

Good Book/loaded

I found out more about Hypothyroidism than I ever knew before thanks to this book. It also was the catalyst for me to be more assertive regarding my TSH test results which said normal range.
I was feeling anything but normal.
I do feel the book is a little deep with medical jargon and information overload. I found it helpful overall but must admitt
it was a little hard to read and depressing in some spots. Left me wondering if I will ever be normal again. Although helpful for a person in a "fog" it is a lot to handle.

Exercises are Useful, But Instructions aren't Easy to Follow

The book offers several exercises for helping students practice their pronunciation skills, yet is not organized in a way that's easy for teachers and students to quickly assess what they need to do for each exercise. It provides instructions in narrative form before each exercise and offers partner practice exercises in different areas of the book--not right on pages next to each other. The text is pretty dense. I would prefer seeing instructions in a list rather than in paragraph form so to break down the information so it can be followed more easily.

THE quintessential book on football scouting

If you are, hope to be, or want to learn about football scouting, you are doing yourself & the job itself a complete disservice if you do not own a copy & have read (multiple times) this quintessential book on the subject of football scouting. I am straight up not overselling this book AT ALL & any scout that has read this book will almost surely tell you the same thing. Written decades before anyone (outside of maybe college football coaches/scouts) ever knew of or cared about anyone named Belichick, this book was known in scouting circles as THE book on the topic. Well written, concise, easy to follow & incredibly pragmatic in it's methods. Just like the Belichick men themselves.

Great football book

This book is great for anyone trying to learn how to scout a team. Obviously this book was written a long time ago and the game has changed very much since then. However the information on how to scout a team is still highly relevant. The formations shown in diagrams will not be seen in today's game, but that doesn't matter since the diagrams were not meant to show the formations that you will see but how to sketch the formations that you do see. The names of some position have also been changed, but it is quite easy to realize who he is talking about in the terms we use today. Steve Belichick is a great football mind and this is a great football book.

About the Author
Eddie Starnater is one of the top Primitive and Survival Skills experts in the United States, and has been practicing and perfecting his Primitive, Wilderness and Survival skills since childhood. Over the past 40 years Eddie has become a Master Flintknapper, and an expert bowyer, tracker, primitive potter and maker of all types of primitive weaponry. He has spent years living in the woods and off the land, learning wild edible and medicinal plants and perfecting his wide range of Wilderness Survival skills — both on countless Survival Outings in varied eco-systems around the country, and while living for months at a time in a long-term shelter in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. Eddie has been interviewed in publications ranging from Wilderness Way to The New York Times, featured in multiple television segments for local and network news programs, including ABC World News Tonight, and provided many of the stone tools used by Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio del Toro in the 2003 feature film, "The Hunted". A former Hunter Safety Education instructor and Continuing Education teacher in his home State of Texas, Eddie spent over 10 years conducting workshops prior to becoming an instructor for, then Director of, Tom Brown Jr.'s Tracker School. During his tenure there Eddie taught all types of primitive skills, survival, tracking, and nature awareness to tens of thousands of students from around the globe. In 2006 Eddie became tired of the huge class sizes, lecture format and industrialized teaching style of schools that had become more focused on “notebook knowledge” over the hands-on learning and internalization of the skills to which he had dedicated his life. He decided it was past time to return to his roots and get back to teaching in the manner in which he was taught. Eddie founded Practical Primitive together with Julie Martin in January 2007. The small-group, adult-only workshops for which their school has become known provide a unique and unparalleled opportunity for those who wish to learn quality skills from one who has spent the majority of his life working, learning, and perfecting the Primitive Arts. He works and lives in New Jersey with Julie Martin, his wonderful partner of 10 years, and their adorable dog, Boomer.
