The author's memoir of life in mainland China and--after the 1949 revolution--Hong Kong is a gruesome chronicle of nonstop emotional abuse from her wealthy father and his beautiful, cruel second wife. Chinese proverbs scattered throughout the text pithily covey the traditional world view that prompted Adeline's subservience. Had she not escaped to America, where she experienced a fulfilling medical career and a happy marriage, her story would be unbearable; instead, it's grimly fascinating: Falling Leaves is an Asian Mommie Dearest.

Although the focus of this memoir is the author's struggle to be loved by a family that treated her cruelly, it is more notable for its portrait of the domestic affairs of an immensely wealthy, Westernized Chinese family in Shanghai as the city evolved under the harsh strictures of Mao and Deng. Yen Mah's father knew how to make money and survive, regardless of the regime in power. In addition to an assortment of profitable enterprises, he stashed away two tons of gold in a Swiss bank, and eventually the family fled to Hong Kong. But he was indifferent to his seven children and in the thrall of a second wife who makes Cinderella's stepmother seem angelic. His first wife, Yen Mah's mother, died at her birth, and the child, considered an ill omen, was treated with crushing severity. But she was encouraged by the love of an aunt and eventually made her way to the U.S., where she became a doctor, married happily and, ironically, was the one her father and stepmother turned to in their old age. In recounting this painful tale, Yen Mah's unadorned prose is powerful, her insights keen and her portrait of her family devastating.

This dramatic autobiography by a writer and doctor begins with the reading of a will that mystifies, then flashes back to recount events in a truly unpleasant family of seven brothers and sisters, a cruel French-Chinese stepmother, and a rich, uncaring father. In 1937, Adeline's mother died giving birth to her in Tienjin, marking her forever as bad luck. The family moved to Shanghai, then Hong Kong, with trips to Monte Carlo, London, and, finally, California for Adeline. In the meantime, with World War II, the Communist takeover in 1949, Maoism, the Cultural Revolution, and the return of Hong Kong to mainland China. Mostly, however, rivalries, jealousies, injustice, neglect, conniving, backbiting, and betrayal dominate this family. An Amazing Story!

In 1937, Adeline Yen Mah's mother died giving birth to her. Because of this, she was considered "bad luck", tormented by her siblings and shunned by her father. Her father soon remarried a beautiful, young Eurasian woman who was cruel and manipulative. She treated all five of her stepchildren badly, but saved her real hatred for Adeline. Falling Leaves is the powerful, riveting memoir of emotional abuse and isolation that Ms Yen Mah suffered at the hands of her stepmother. At this point, most would say, "Why would I want to torture myself by reading a book about child abuse?" The answer is simple...Adeline Yen Mah didn't just survive her childhood, she triumphed. With great wisdom and insight, she tells a story not just about her life, but the life of China, before and after the cultural revolution and how both were changed forever. Despite her miserable childhood, she excelled, became a doctor, married and found freedom and a new life in America. This is an amazing, compelling story, told by an amazing woman who was not only able to put the past behind her, but was able to celebrate life and move forward.

The agonizing story of a dysfunctional Chinese family.

Adeline Yen Mah's "Falling Leaves" is a searingly honest memoir of her unhappy childhood in China. In addition, she provides a colorful and lively portrayal of the customs, history and social upheaval of her native country from the late 1800's until the 1970's. Adeline was the daughter of a prosperous businessman, Joseph Yen, who was happily married to a woman he adored. He had five children, the youngest of whom was Adeline. Tragically, Adeline's mother died shortly after she was born.

To compound the misery, Adeline's father soon married a woman so cruel that she fitted the stereotype of the wicked stepmother in Cinderella. Niang, as Jeanne Prosperi Yen was called by her stepchildren, was a control freak. She was a manipulative woman who verbally and physically abused the children who were out of favor with her. Adeline describes her efforts to grow up whole in spite of a loveless upbringing. She turned for solace most of all to her beloved Aunt Baba, who loved her unconditionally and was truly proud of her. Adeline took great delight in schoolwork, which brought her intellectual and emotional satisfaction.

Mah eloquently recounts harrowing experiences that left lasting scars. In addition, she vividly describes the sights and sounds of such cities as Shanghai, Tianjin and Hong Kong. "Falling Leaves" is an intensely psychological and personal memoir in which Adeline Yeh Mah bares her soul and candidly conveys her difficult struggle to leave the past behind. The result is an unforgettable story of a courageous young woman who, in spite of the obstacles she faced, refused to give in to despair.

Best technical book on photovoltaics

This book stands out for its hands-on approach, and in-depth treatment of all PV related topics: From manufacturing and underlying physics to applications, with economic analyses. The associated theoretical ideas are dealt with in detail, you can't finish reading a topic and be dissatisfied with what you get out of it. You come away with basic understanding, as well as the ability to design and start working with anything you read about. Remarkable.
In all, great book.. I've used it out of a library, but can't wait for a cheaper edition.

Excellent practical and theoretical guidebook

One of the few books in the field that spans the theoretical aspects of photovoltaic energy conversion through direct application and design of systems for remote village electrification. Expensive but if you are in the field of PV application or system design, it is worth it.

Methodical, extensive quizzes & examples, but poorly bound

ISBN 159126443X (FE Other Disciplines Review Manual (ODRM), 1st ed.) is a quite comprehensive and methodical step-by-step guide addressing all the aspects of the NCEES FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) computer-based testing. The NCEES exam outline is in the FE Reference Handbook (RH) free for downloading and urged to be studied. A searchable, electronic copy of RH will be displayed on the monitor during the exam.

14 separate areas are extensively covered in this ODRM to review the preparation for the testing through 14 mini exams, one per each covered areas of knowledge, as chemistry, dynamics, statics, etc. The content is full of mathematical formulas incl. the RH's equations highlighted, well as schematics, diagrams, tables, etc. on high graphical level in black, white and blue.

The content of its 656 large pages is clearly divided into 14 parts and 48 chapters. Each diagnostic exam on several pages is followed by explanatory summary with practice quizzes called examples. The sub-chapters are clearly divided into paragraphs in a graphically appealing form. The sub-chapter titles and subtitles are boldfaced in blue and their content often highlighted also in blue. This graphically enhanced structure allows to easier grasp the pages at 1st glance. After the initial reading, the emphasized parts can be skimmed through just for warming up.

The front pastedown (endpaper) contains an access code to the Web interactive version of the book with updates to more practice online on the companion website. Approx. 79 pages of the book incl. index are shown by the Amazon.com's "LOOK INSIDE!" function. What cannot be seen is that the book is well printed on excellent paper, and the flimsy soft covers, which are unfortunately typical for the series, are prone to creasing. However, it could be expect that a $200 book is hardbound to preserve its value over a longer period.

I passed the FE exam

I passed the FE exam using this book and the accompanying review problems by same author. I also watched some online videos posted by Texas A & M that anyone can access from an internet search. I HIGHLY recommend getting the book of review PROBLEMS in addition to this review MANUAL because you will need to practice working problems out. The review manual and SEPARATE review problems prepared me well for the exam.

Not bad, but Lacking Depth for Outsiders to Certain Topics

The book does well in some aspects, but leaves something to be desired in others. While reading the review and the doing the example problems is fine, the real issue with this book arises when it comes to doing the practice problems (FE Other Disciplines Practice Problems) for each chapter. Some important/useful tidbits of information are left out which makes this book pale in comparison to the textbooks I would have (or have) acquired in college.

My most recent issue is: moments are not dependent on distance/length for other moments to obtain equilibrium (taken from the solution of practice problem 5 in chapter 7 of the practice problems book). The review manual makes no reference to the distance dependency whatsoever when it comes to achieving equilibrium.

In general, I believe that if it's to be called a review manual it should go into a bit more detail on certain topics. It's not that helpful if it glosses over some information where you'll need to look it up somewhere else (book or Internet) when I could have done that just be reading over the reference handbook and practice/prep material (e.g., problems and test(s)) without spending $200 on this book.

Maybe the issues I'm facing wouldn't be what they are if I was doing this while I was still in college and not 1.5 years after graduating (having not done any of this material since then), but I feel like they should be addressed.

About the Author
Victor R. Preedy is a senior member of King's College London (Professor of Nutritional Biochemistry) and King's College Hospital (Professor of Clinical Biochemistry; Hon). He is attached to both the Diabetes and Nutritional Sciences Division and the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics. He is also Director of the Genomics Centre and a member of the School of Medicine. Professor Preedy graduated in 1974 with an Honours Degree in Biology and Physiology with Pharmacology. He gained his University of London PhD in 1981 and in 1992, he received his Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists. Professor Preedy was elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Biology in 1995 and to the Royal College of Pathologists in 2000. Since then he has been elected as a Fellow to the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health (2004) and The Royal Institute of Public Health and Hygiene (2004). In 2009, Professor Preedy became a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health and in 2012 a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. During his career, Professor Preedy has worked at the National Heart Hospital (part of Imperial College London) and the MRC Centre at Northwick Park Hospital. He has collaborated with research groups in Finland, Japan, Australia, USA and Germany. He is a leading expert on nutritional and food sciences and has a long standing interest in how food, food quality, nutrition and diet affect wellbeing and health. He has lectured nationally and internationally. To his credit, Professor Preedy has over 600 publications, which includes peer-reviewed manuscripts based on original research, abstracts and symposium presentations, reviews, books and volumes.

This manga is incredible! The story gets started straight away, and keeps you reading the entire way through! It's a new manga so there's really no catching up that needs to be done, and for new manga readers, the English version even has a little part at the start teaching you how manga should be read. Don't get caught up in it too much though. You never know when one of them will sneak up behind YOU.

Intelligent Unmanned Ground Vehicles describes the technology developed and the results obtained by the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute in the course of the DARPA Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) project. The goal of this work was to equip off-road vehicles with computer-controlled, unmanned driving capabilities. The book describes contributions in the area of mobility for UGVs including: tools for assembling complex autonomous mobility systems; on-road and off-road navigation; sensing techniques; and route planning algorithms. In addition to basic mobility technology, the book covers a number of integrated systems demonstrated in the field in realistic scenarios. The approaches presented in this book can be applied to a wide range of mobile robotics applications, from automated passenger cars to planetary exploration, and construction and agricultural machines.
Intelligent Unmanned Ground Vehicles shows the progress that was achieved during this program, from brittle specially-built robots operating under highly constrained conditions, to groups of modified commercial vehicles operating in tough environments. One measure of progress is how much of this technology is being used in other applications. For example, much of the work in road-following, architectures and obstacle detection has been the basis for the Automated Highway Systems (AHS) prototypes currently under development. AHS will lead to commercial prototypes within a few years. The cross-country technology is also being used in the development of planetary rovers with a projected launch date within a few years. The architectural tools built under this program have been used in numerous applications, from an automated harvester to an autonomous excavator.
The results reported in this work provide tools for further research development leading to practical, reliable and economical mobile robots.
