Awesome for grad students

I bought this book for my Macroeconomics course for my MBA. The book is really good since it covers all aspects related with GDP, business cycles, monetary and fiscal policies, inflation and unemployment, and so on. It's an easy reading, with recent information and data not only from US but also from other countries. Must read for those who are interested in business.

About the Author
Dr. Ron Larson is a professor of mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University, where he has taught since 1970. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado and is considered the pioneer of using multimedia to enhance the learning of mathematics, having authored over 30 software titles since 1990. Dr. Larson conducts numerous seminars and in-service workshops for math educators around the country about using computer technology as an instructional tool and motivational aid. He is the recipient of the 2013 Text and Academic Authors Association Award for CALCULUS, the 2012 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for CALCULUS: AN APPLIED APPROACH, the 2011 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for PRECALCULUS: REAL MATHEMATICS, REAL PEOPLE, and the 1996 Text and Academic Authors Association TEXTY Award for INTERACTIVE CALCULUS (a complete text on CD-ROM that was the first mainstream college textbook to be offered on the Internet). Dr. Larson authors numerous textbooks including the best-selling Calculus series published by Cengage Learning.

High School Calculus Teacher's Opinion

I teach High School AP Calculus (AB), and we just started using this book. Our school has used two different Calculus books in the past (Bittinger, and Hughes-Hallett), and when I took Calculus in college we used the Stewart book. Out of these books that I have experience with, I think Calculus of a Single Variable by Ron Larson (9th ed.) is the best by far.

The order and manner in which the material is presented is outstanding. The problems at the end of each section are well thought out and numerous. As a teacher, there are plenty of problems for every section for me to either use in class or assign for homework. Other reviewers have complained that the problems do not contain a wide enough variety of complexity, but I have not found that to be the case. Perhaps if I was teaching a college calculus course I might run into that problem, but I have not encountered it in high school. For this first AP Calculus class, we only cover about the first 7-8 out of the 10 chapters in this book.

Additionally, the publishers provide a website where students can find all of the odd problems in the book worked out. It is nice to have odd answers in the back of the book, but it is even better if the students can see the steps of how to work a troubling problem online.

The only downside might be that at times the descriptions of new topics are a little too complicated for students to learn just from reading the text book (but that's what a teacher is for, right?!). I would not expect my students to be able to learn the topics on their own, and after we have covered material and worked exampled in class, the book becomes a lot more accessible for students to use as a review resource.

Overall, I really like this book. I would highly recommend it if you are thinking about switching text books- especially for AP Calculus!

This book has almost no differences from the 8th edition other than it is an older edition. Larson covers virtually all topics in calculus with multiple approaches preparing students for success whether it's on the AP exam or taking a course in Calculus. The authors focus on concepts and not just calculations enabling a deeper understanding of calculus. As a teacher, I appreciate this author's work.

Best Calculus Book Ever!

This is the most useful math book ever. It has a great section full of prerequisites: including their explanations, practice problems, and a cumulative review. It is very readable. The book starts each new chapter talking about an interesting application that you will get to study.

My order came in perfect condition and in a timely manner.

There are also extra resources that Ron Larson has put online for the book, which may prove helpful.

I haven't taken Calculus in four years, and I'm generally two sections ahead of the rest of the class when it comes to homework and understanding the material, because the examples are so well written, and the explanations work from the ground up. The definitions are also very simple to read, and many of the definitions have proofs in the back of the book.

Real life applications, capstone exercises, and problems from past Putnam Exams are contained in every chapter. These are great for testing the skills you acquire as you read through the book, and they reinforce the importance of Calculus.

They also have proven motivational at times. When a topic becomes abstract, it's easy to get bored to the point of apathy, but when you know that working through the topic is going to give you a really unique skill, it makes it all worth while.

There are formula cards that are perforated, so one may tear them out for an easy reference. Whether or not you decide to tear these formula cards out, they are immeasurable in value. They are concise, and will help you retain old information as new information comes along.

I have other Larson products, but this has to be my favorite Although, I must say, Ron Larson writes the best mathematics books that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Whether you're a student, a self-learner, or just need a reference for Calculus: this is, in my opinion, the best there is.

About the Author

David E. Sadava is the Pritzker Family Foundation Professor of Biology, Emeritus, at the Keck Science Center of Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Scripps, three of The Claremont Colleges. In addition, he is Adjunct Professor of Cancer Cell Biology at the City of Hope Medical Center. Twice winner of the Huntoon Award for superior teaching, Dr. Sadava has taught courses on introductory biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, plant biology, and cancer biology. In addition to Life: The Science of Biology, he is the author or coauthor of books on cell biology and on plants, genes, and crop biotechnology. His research has resulted in many papers coauthored with his students, on topics ranging from plant biochemistry to pharmacology of narcotic analgesics to human genetic diseases. For the past 15 years, he has investigated multi-drug resistance in human small-cell lung carcinoma cells with a view to understanding and overcoming this clinical challenge. At the City of Hope, his current work focuses on new anti-cancer agents from plants.David M. Hillis is the Alfred W. Roark Centennial Professor in Integrative Biology at the University of Texas at Austin, where he also has directed the Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics and the School of Biological Sciences. MacArthur Fellowship, and has served as President of the Society for the Study of Evolution and of the Society of Systematic Biologists. He served on the National Research Council committee that wrote the report BIO 2010: Transforming Undergraduate Biology Education for Research Biologists, and currently serves on the Executive Committee of the National Academies Scientific Teaching Alliance. His research interests span much of evolutionary biology, including experimental studies of evolving viruses, empirical studies of natural molecular evolution, applications of phylogenetics, analyses of biodiversity, and evolutionary modeling. He is particularly interested in teaching and research about the practical applications of evolutionary biology. H. Craig Heller is the Lorry I. Lokey/Business Wire Professor in Biological Sciences and Human Biology at Stanford University. He has taught in the core biology courses at Stanford since 1972 and served as Director of the Program in Human Biology, Chairman of the Biolo-gical Sciences Department, and Associate Dean of Research. Dr. Heller is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a recipient of the Walter J. Gores Award for excellence in teaching and the Kenneth Cuthberson Award for Exceptional Service to Stanford University. His research is on the neurobiology of sleep and circadian rhythms, mammalian hibernation, the regulation of body temperature, the physiology of human performance, and the neurobiology of learning. He has done research on a huge variety of animals and physiolo-gical problems, including from sleeping kangaroo rats, diving seals, hibernating bears, photo-periodic hamsters, and exercising athletes. Dr. Heller has extended his enthusiasm for promoting active learning via the development of a two-year curriculum in human biology for the middle grades, through the production of Virtual Labs—interactive computer-based modules to teach physiology.
May Berenbaum is the Swanlund Professor and Head of the Department of Entomology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has taught courses in introductory animal biology, entomology, insect ecology and chemical ecology and has received awards at the regional and national levels teaching from the Entomological Society of America. A fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society, she served as President of the American Institute for Biological Sciences in 2009 and currently serves on the Board of Directors of AAAS. Her research addresses insect-plant coevolution from molecular mechanisms of detoxification to impacts of herbivory on community structure. Concerned with the practical application of ecological and evolutionary principles, she has examined impacts of genetic engineering, global climate change, and invasive species on natural and agricultural ecosystems. In recognition of her work, she received the 2011 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement. Devoted to fostering science literacy, she has published numerous articles and five books on insects for the general public.

Easy to follow and full of useful information!

The pictures and the diagrams are really nice in this textbook. The layout is also nice and easy to follow. There is a ton of information so pair it with the study guide and you'll be able to do great! I got the loose leaf version so it was easier for me to carry a few chapters around at a time rather than the whole thing.

DEVIATIONS, a handbook and users’ guide on architectural design pedagogy, pursues the strategy of the Trojan horse, infiltrating a given system’s practices in order to transform them from within. While documenting the opening moves of the architectural design curriculum at the ETH Zurich, the manual exposes teaching to a series of tests. It promotes a departure from the seemingly familiar and stable grounds of recognized design approaches in pursuit of more open tactics – initiating a plea for a new type of architectural practice. Rather than opposing the established order of things, the approach embraces this order while simultaneously working both with and against manufactured conventions. Taking on the operative mechanisms of everyday practice, median standards, and normative action as the very stuff of design, concepts and techniques emerge whose foci are not based on form, but on how architecture might perform. In addition to the orientation provided within the individual chapters, a graphic navigational structure guides readers through the book as a whole and enables them to scan through the work or focus on specific projects. Following the framework of an academic year, the book is divided into a series of sections devoted to the thematic areas: space, program, technology, context and form. Marc Angélil and Dirk Hebel have taught architectural design at several universities in Europe and the United States. Over the last few years, they have been collaboratively engaged in a didactic experiment reframing the introductory design course at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich.

Marc M. Angélil is professor of design in the Department of Architecture at the ETH Zürich. Dirk Hebel is the senior assistant professor associated with Prof. Angélil s chair; he also teaches at Syracuse University in New York.

For you to decipher

It is a difficult book to understand, certainly not a book to be called a manual. Perhaps that is the nature of this sort of architectural course recipe, and it reads more like an yearbook of a renowned school than for a reader to learn a few secrets behind the didactics i.e. how to analyze students' works or what criteria should be accompanied with an assignment to give criticism. Going through the Master's program myself, it was a mystery to experience such transformation of mind that I often wish to go back in time to pick up what had been said in the crits, because nothing made much sense back then. Hence, it is of great interest when I see a book of this sort and has to be purchased to see what secrets have been unveiled. However, the book is a disappointment in that sense although it provides with a certain new direction in teaching process oriented architecture not revolving around computer. As the introduction is titled 'Inchoate Deviations', that should be what to expect from this book, personal documentation of several years of academic rigors facing formal issues to be shared with.

Also a true rarity: I can't think of a single place where you will find this topic, rich and sprawling, so elegantly distilled, and to such delightful effect. A history, a tutorial, an excavation, an inspired miscellany, all at once. A must-read for anyone interested in visual culture, fashion, design.

About the Author
Jeff Volek is a dietitian-scientist who has spent 15 years studying diet and exercise effects on health and performance. He has held an academic position at Ball State University and is currently an associate professor at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Volek has contributed to 3 books, 2 patents, and over 200 papers. He received his dietetic training at Michigan State University and Penrose St Francis Hospital and his PhD in Exercise Physiology from Penn State University. Steve Phinney is a physician-scientist who has spent 35 years studying diet, exercise, fatty acids, and inflammation. He has held academic positions at the Universities of Vermont, Minnesota, and California at Davis, as well as leadership positions at Monsanto, Galileo Laboratories, and Efficas. Dr. Phinney has published over 70 papers and several patents. He received his MD from Stanford University, his PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry from MIT, and post-doctoral training at the University of Vermont and Harvard.

In Depth and Utterly Fascinating

There are so very many in depth and all inclusive reviews I see no reason to parrot what they have all said, but I'll say that I agree enthusiastically. Jimmy Moore's review in particular is a gem!

As a person who is fascinated with this subject and who eagerly devoured both of Gary Taubes' books, this one offers yet a deeper and more clinical examination of the science of low carbohydrate eating from two doctors who have been immersed in this field for 30 years. This is most definitely NOT a book for the casual reader interested in following a low carb diet. Rather, this is a book that will be understood and appreciated by someone who has a great deal of personal interest in learning more about this subject and who enjoys the deeply scientific explanations and discussion, and additionally, a person who has already done a fair bit of reading on this subject. This book is most definitely targeted at someone with a scientific and medical background, specifically doctors, and there are things that I had to read a few times to fully comprehend and absorb, but if you have the inclination and interest, this is a very rewarding and enlightening discussion that is quite unique in the current low carb literature. One would be hard pressed to deny the absolutely overwhelming and glaring evidence arguing for low carb diets when the vast body of proof is presented as compellingly and clearly is it is here. Low carb's undeniable superiority as a way of eating is nothing short of amazing to read about in all its historic and fascinating glory. My own personal observation and experience (also success) with eating low carb left me with vaguely formed ideas and I was self-identified as perhaps a "carb sensitive" person, and yet I couldn't put it all together in terms of how it ultimately affected me until I read this book, which discusses this subject at great length. Carb sensitivity is apparently a matter of degree within each individual, and I now understand the hows and whys of its effects on me as related to my own independent observations over the years. It's now clear why a low carb diet works so superbly and easily for me (when nothing else works) and why it has so vastly improved my health in myriad ways.

Another important discussion was that of individual variability, which explains why not every diet works for everyone equally, why some don't gain weight on a high carb diet and why some can lose weight equally well on various types of diets. One shoe obviously does not fit all, and for some, only one shoe fits!

Despite my own success with weight loss and good health eating low carb, I still had this nagging worry about fats in particular, especially in light of the deafening chorus of low carb detractors out there who railed endlessly about the dangers of fat. My insecurity about this aspect of low carb eating has now been entirely put to rest because of how fully the authors explain the body's use of fat in all its aspects. This alone make this book a valuable asset.

As it was when I was reading the two Taubes books, I continue to be dismayed and disgusted by the narrow mindedness and yes, dishonesty of the general scientific/nutrition community. The word "sheeple" comes to mind, but it's even more than that. It's about politics, money, influence peddling as well. It is nothing short of amazing how so many of us lay folks out in the trenches can quite clearly see all the evidence for what it is and relate it to our own experiences, and as a result we draw such a different conclusion from the so-called "experts" with regard to the merits of low carb eating. Many, maybe even most of the diet gurus continue to march down that same old highway chanting their tired mantra of low fat/high carb/grains are great, all while totally ignoring or at least remaining oblivious to decades of increasing obesity rates that are the result of their recommendations. Do they never connect any dots or examine the evidence? In the popular media, it is a continual frustration to hear them continue to hawk diets full of the very foods that keep their patients overweight, increasingly diabetic and unhealthy. Virtually everything I come across that is not written within the low carb framework is jam packed with misinformation and downright untruths, proclaiming as desirable, healthy and effective the very approaches and strategies that were long ago shown to be just the opposite. Old habits and beliefs die hard, apparently.

So if you have already done a fair bit of reading on this subject and thirst for a deeper, more thorough knowledge and understanding of the history and actual body mechanics of low carb nutrition, then this is definitely a book you will want to read and enjoy. In addition, it provides you with a huge new database of ammunition with which to make your own case and defense of low carb nutrition! Overall a very fascinating, enlightening, comprehensive and well presented discussion that delves deeper than anything I have yet to come across in this field. Despite the rather high cost of this book, it is well worth owning.

Love low carb/keto living

I just lost 20 pounds in four months doing a KETO based diet. JUST read this book...so helpful. I'm a low carb/primal/paleo (can we invent anymore labels nowadays? LOL!) I have not eaten grains, beans, much fruit for 6 years. No longer have any chronic respiratory problems BUT I never lost weight ..maintained - kinda but never lost. I was eating too much protein - who knew? I started to research lower calories and learned about adjusting my macros and keeping a food log on FitDay.com (oh yeah I caved and started logging my daily foods) and lost the weight fast. Some weeks I gained a pound but the next week I lost two...what they say in this book about water weight fluctuation is true. I only weigh once a week. NOW I am learning to maintain...I exercise moderately which means my new macro calculations are about 3-400 more calories a day. Bummer Man...now I have to eat more Kerry Gold butter and organic coconut oil while keeping my protein and carbs the same...oh well LOL!

Don't listen to the naysayers! Oh, the only reason I gave this four not five stars is because canola oil is mentioned as part of the good oils...no no no - new research says that Canola oil (or rape seed oil as it is called) is rancid stuff and coconut oil is hardly mentioned at all and should be. I make coffee every morning with a tab of butter and a tab of coconut oil and blend with my "Smart Stick" - a little cinnamon, a couple of tabs of chia seeds - amazing treat. The book was published in 2010 so it makes sense that the current research on oils is not included. Other than that - wonderful...another low carb bible to add to my library. Love low carb/keto living...thanks for well researched information gentlemen.

A book that has changed my life!

I am turning 60 next month and this book has set me on a course spending the next few decades I have being healthy, not dependent on drugs, and with a nutritional plan that is satisfying with great rewards. I have gone from 240lbs to 175lbs, down from "44's to 34's" in my pants, from XXL to Mediums in shirts. I am not a "reader," but this book caught my heart and soul giving me hope and results. Many have given up on doctors and politicians just as myself, but now are taking on, by ourselves, being responsible for our personal well-being physically. This book is easy to read, very well laid out, and written for the potential of your success. And here is the bottom line - it works! Go for it. Practical help for stuck relationships

Though this is a text book for therapists, In Quest of the Mythical Mate is easy to read and offers powerful strategies for couples. If your communication is stuck in negative patterns, following the models offered in this book will help. In particular, the fair-fighting guidelines are useful. These are not prescribed by the book, but agreed upon between the parties, suited to the unique circumstances and needs in each relationship. There is also a structure for communicating difficult issues which can be very useful in disarming potential conflict. My partner and I found it very useful in improving our communication and our understanding of each other.

It's all about learning and growing....they teach it, they live it. Anyone who is fortunate enough to learn this model discovers not only skills to use as one shoots for goals but what and where the targets are. Both my practice and my marriage have grown as a result.

Drawing upon his own broad experience and the characteristics of the six most common death-causing diseases, Nuland examines what death means to the doctor, patient, nurse, administrator, and family. Thought provoking and humane, his is not the usual syrup-and-generality approach to this well-worn topic. Fundamental to it are Nuland's experiences with the deaths of his aunt, his older brother, and a longtime patient. With each of these deaths, he made what he now sees as mistakes of denial, false hope, and refusal to abide by a patient's wishes. Disease, not death, is the real enemy, he reminds us, despite the facts that most deaths are unpleasant, painful, or agonized, and to argue otherwise is to plaster over the truth. The doctor, Nuland stresses, should instill in dying patients the hope not for a miraculous cure but for the dignity and high quality of the remainder of their lives as well as of what they have meant--and will continue to mean--to family, friends, and colleagues. A sobering look at the clinical reality of death by a physician who wants it known that ``we rarely go gentle into that good night.'' Nuland (Yale Medical School; Doctors, 1988) takes the position that if we know the truth about the physical process of dying, we can rid ourselves of both our fears and our false expectations. By becoming familiar with the common patterns of illness, he says, we'll be better prepared to make appropriate decisions about continuing treatment or calling it quits. Nuland selects several common causes of death--heart attack, old age, Alzheimer's, violence, AIDS, and cancer--and, with unrelenting honesty and unsettling detail, shows precisely what happens to the body involved. His account of the decline and death of his grandmother--with whom he shared a bedroom until he was in his late teens and she in her late 90s--is unforgettable, as is his story of his well-intentioned mismanagement of the care of his older brother when he was dying of cancer. The emotional impact of these stories is quite different from that produced by the author's coldly clinical accounts (``a specific sequence of events takes place in people who bleed to death. At first, they will usually hyperventilate...''); but by demonstrating that dying is usually a messy business, Nuland succeeds in demythologizing death. His message is that the dignity we seek in dying must be found not in our final weeks, days, or moments--but in how we've lived our lives. Frank yet compassionate book about death & dying.

What actually happens during "clinical death"? Why do we age, and what happens to the body? This award-winning account describes in frank yet compassionate detail just what most of us are likely to face when the time comes, Sherwin B. Nuland's How We Die combines erudition and eloquence in a refreshingly unsentimental look at the processes of death. A distinguished surgeon and gifted writer, Nuland illuminates the mechanisms of cancer, heart attack, AIDS, and Alzheimer's disease with precision and compassionate awareness.
Why read such a book? Taking away the fear of the unknown can bring courage and peace in the face of a difficult time. This book presents unpleasant facts in simple language that anyone can understand.
Chapters cover different types of death, making clear the physiological changes and medical choices that go along with each one. It addresses both medical and emotional realities of common conditions such as cancer, heart disease, AIDS, Alzheimer's, severe trauma, and just plain wearing out. (Be prepared to cry, since reading this book may make you experience feelings associated with people you love.)
What makes this book such compelling reading is that Nuland brings to this subject all of the depth and breadth of his background AND his deep concern for the human condition. His long career at a high-powered academic medical center (Yale), his knowledge of the history of medicine, of literature and philosophy, and his own personal losses are all woven into his thesis. He is thus highly convincing when he criticizes physicians for becoming seduced by the intellectual challenge of solving "The Riddle" and making recommendations not in the best interests of the patient/family.
But the power of the book is in its intensely personal depiction of these events and in the lessons which Nuland draws from his experiences. The message is twofold: very few will "die with dignity" so that (1) it behooves us to lead a productive LIFE of dignity, (2) physicians, patients, and families should behave appropriately to allow nature to take its course instead of treating death as the enemy to be staved off at any cost. Only then will it be possible for us to die in the "best" possible way--in relative comfort, in the company of those we love/who love us.
A "must read" for those of us in the baby-boomer generation who, unfortunately, are going to have to deal with a lot of what's covered in this book over the remainder of our lives.

Insightful and hopeful

I bought this book to help me understand so that I could better assist my sister who was diagnosed with stage four metastatic lung cancer. Dr. Nuland so accurately described the behavior of physicians when they come to the realization that there's nothing more that can be done for their patient. I have seen it with the treatment of my sister by her oncologist whom she has worked with the past six years looking to find effective treatment to provide my sister with a few more years of a productive life. When the therapy worked, my sister was a miracle case, now that it is not, my sister is scheduled with an assistant and when she does see her oncologist it is for a fleeting period.
I say hopeful because Dr. Nuland not only identifies the existing problem, but examines ways in which our health care system can be overhauled.
This was an excellent book not only from the perspective of a physician, but a humane and empathetic way to look at the process of dying.

The book needs to be taken very seriously I have personally lived a tragedy recently I have lost my beloved wife during the 15 months of desperate fight against the great killer she and us has suffered all the terrible medical interventions with no benefit at all Medicine needs a totally different approach for terminal ilnesses
