Review

"An admirably lucid attempt to reinvoke and strengthen the liberal core of Mill's theory....[The book's] great merit is to have consistently argued the case against paternalistic legislation in relation to specific areas of legal policy and legislative debate. Not only does Feinberg convincingly make the case that no area of interference into the domain of self-regarding action is trivial...but he also persuasively pursues all the policy implications and moral connotations of the various contemporary legal test cases of the contours of individual privacy."--Times Higher Education Supplement

"Because of his focus on the moral limits of the criminal law, Feinberg develops, with characteristic subtlety and illumination, an account of what he calls failures of consent in two-party cases: when does the consent on the part of the party harmed to the action of another harming him or her fail to make the other's action legally permissible and so justify criminal prohibitions of the other's harmful conduct?....[A] first-rate work...of moral philosophy...contain[s] richly detailed and illuminating discussions of a host of issues concerning paternalism and deserve[s] [a] central place...in the contemporary debate over it."--Ethics

Ian Myles Slater on: Words from the Earth
By Ian M. Slater
A remarkable amount of the literature of ancient Mesopotamia, and some neighboring regions, has come down to us due to the fact that it was written on clay, or occasionally cut into stone, and has survived into modern times literally by the ton. Of course, most of the sheer volume seems to have been things like tax receipts, "account receivable," disbursement orders, contracts, business letters, and scribal exercises; cuneiform ("wedge-shape") writing seems to have been developed for bureaucratic, not literary, reasons. The oldest texts still seem to be those in Sumerian, a language with no known relatives, although there is increasing evidence that the script was being used to write a Semitic language earlier than had been thought.

In "Before the Muses" (1993; third edition, 2005), we have an anthology of literary texts in what has become known as Akkadian, covering the temporal, regional, and literary dialects of an East Semitic language which used to be referred to, awkwardly, as "Assyrian and Babylonian," after the two main geographic divisions. It runs from the "Archaic" phase (say, 2300 B.C.E.) to the Late Period, ending somewhere around 100 B.C.E. I've read enough other translations of some of the contents to feel safe in saying that Foster's English renderings of them are impressive for their literary quality. (His accuracy I pretty much have to take on faith.)

With the exception of "Gilgamesh," which Foster separately translated for Norton (and has several other recent translations in print, notably by Stephanie Dalley, in the Oxford World's Classics' "Myths from Mesopotamia," and by Andrew George, in Penguin Classics' "The Epic of Gilgamesh") the translator has crammed into this collection at least a substantial sample of the most important literary genres of the ancient Assyrians and Babylonians. It includes mythic narratives, epics of heroes and historical kings, Wisdom texts, humorous stories, royal inscriptions, poetry, letters, and more; the harvest of over a century and a half of work in the field, and in museums and collections. Bit by bit the material has been identified, copied and photographed, the complex script transliterated, and, finally, the words have been rendered into modern languages.

Alas, I have to agree with an earlier reviewer who complained about the binding -- at over a thousand pages, it is an overstuffed paperback which is sure to crack its spine in ordinary use. It is also awkward to handle, both in terms of weight on the hands or wrists, especially for those with joint problems, and in preventing it from breaking in two while being read. Just letting the open book lie flat also tends to stress the binding.

On the other hand, a hardcover edition of "Before the Muses," or one in two volumes, like its first edition, although easier to handle, would be at a higher price; which, although I know is quite reasonable by present standards, as it is, still gives me sticker-shock. (A sign of how long I have been buying books, I suppose.)

For those who can't afford it, or don't want to invest that much in something unfamiliar, the abridged edition of 1995, "From Distant Days: Myths, Tales, and Poetry of Ancient Mesopotamia," is still available, at a more down-to-earth price. (This could be counted as a second edition plus-or-minus; it contains some material not included in the first edition, as well as corrections incorporated from the official second edition....) Frankly, though, if you are really interested in ancient non-Western literatures, or the background of the Bible, or Middle Eastern History (among other topics), my advice is to go ahead with the full version if you can; otherwise you might wind up buying both. And, in an area of scholarship that is still developing, a later edition of the same translation is usually the better choice. (Is anyone else thinking 'e-book'?)

And, besides being overstuffed with regards to the binding, the full edition is stuffed full of both otherwise readily available material (like a translation of the Babylonian Creation Epic, "Enuma Elish," and the other myths and mythological epics included in Dalley's volume) and masses of hymns, prayers, incantations, and secular literature. Much of it previously was available in English only in technical journals, or not at all. Some of the translations were from early in the twentieth century, and of dubious reliability. (Those who read German or French have had comparable, if less inclusive, volumes available for years; back in the 1980s and early 1990s, I struggled with those, as well as running down English translations in a large University library.)

[It somewhat belatedly occurred to me that I might as well identify the French and German volumes, for those who are curious, and read one or both with more ease than I ever achieved. The French translation is M.-J. Seux. "Hymnes et prières aux dieux de Babylonie et d'assyrie" published in 1978. W. von Soden contributed the second part of "Sumerische und Akkadische Hymnen und Gebete" published in 1953 (Adam Falkenstein having translated the Sumerian texts). There is considerable overlap between these two collections, given that both are made up of the same types of documents. Something over half of von Soden's selections are included by Foster; and, if 20-year-old memories are accurate, about the same is true of Seux's. Note that although von Soden is highly thought of, his work has aged during a continuing expansion of modern knowledge of the ancient language.]

An absolutely magnificent anthology.
By Boris S
A great translation for both experts and literature lovers like me, Foster provides citations and references on almost every page, for those interested in broadening their knowledge on the subject. My only complaint about specifically this edition of the book is that it's printed paperback, which is horrible, considering its more than 1000 pages long. I hope to see a hardcover version in the future.

a very lovely collection
By A. Vijunas
I am not a specialist of Akkadian studies, and bought this book merely out of interest. This very thick book (over 1000 pages) covers the different periods of the Akkadian history, from Old Akkadian (Archaic period) to the Late period, offering a very wide selection of texts (hymns, letters, incantations, love and mythological poems, legends, etc.). There is also a fairly lengthy introduction with numerous references to other literature, which will surely benefit not only amateur, but also professional students of the field.

Very telling
By J. Ford
This is a very telling book of where certain people in high places in international forums think we should go and what we should do as a whole.

Written in 1972 and with a forward by none other than Maurice Strong, globalist, fear monger, and general enemy of nation states and civil liberties.

These are the people that wish to rule your daily lives for you and I.

Worth the read.

Think the global warming hoax started recently?
Wrong. Read the book.

I read this as a required reading at high school and am interested in rereading it as I think futurologistists do not have their predictions tested.

Star Wars: Outbound Flight, by Timothy Zahn

It began as the ultimate voyage of discovery–only to become the stuff of lost Republic legend . . . and a dark chapter in Jedi history. Now, at last, acclaimed author Timothy Zahn returns to tell the whole extraordinary story of the remarkable–and doomed–Outbound Flight Project.

The Clone Wars have yet to erupt when Jedi Master Jorus C’baoth petitions the Senate for support of a singularly ambitious undertaking. Six Jedi Masters, twelve Jedi Knights, and fifty thousand men, women, and children will embark–aboard a gargantuan vessel, equipped for years of travel–on a mission to contact intelligent life and colonize undiscovered worlds beyond the known galaxy. The government bureaucracy threatens to scuttle the expedition before it can even start–until Master C’baoth foils a murderous conspiracy plot, winning him the political capital he needs to set in motion the dream of Outbound Flight.

Or so it would seem. For unknown to the famed Jedi Master, the successful launch of the mission is secretly being orchestrated by an unlikely ally: the evil Sith Lord, Darth Sidious, who has his own reasons for wanting Outbound Flight to move forward . . . and, ultimately, to fail.

Yet Darth Sidious is not the mission’s most dangerous challenge. Once underway, the starship crosses paths at the edge of Unknown Space with the forces of the alien Chiss Ascendancy and the brilliant mastermind best known as “Thrawn.” Even Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, aboard Outbound Flight with his young Padawan student, Anakin Skywalker, cannot help avert disaster. Thus what begins as a peaceful Jedi mission is violently transformed into an all-out war for survival against staggering odds–and the most diabolical of adversaries.

Timothy Zahn’s unique mix of espionage, political gamesmanship, and deadly interstellar combat breathes electrifying life into a Star Wars legend.

Familiar characters such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, young Anakin Skywalker and the evil Lord Palpatine (aka Darth Sidious) make appearances, but the true star is Commander Thrawn, a red-eyed, blue-skinned alien. On the Outbound Flight, a mammoth Jedi exploration and colonization vessel sent to far-off reaches of the cosmos to identify potential Force-users and hunt down a lost knight, Jedi Master Jorus C'baoth struggles with an inappropriate lust for power. Thrawn's attack on the ship (secretly influenced by Darth Sidious's agents) insures his own eventual exile from his race and sets other sinister wheels in motion. As these old and new characters wrestle with difficult moral questions, Zahn deftly portrays their inner struggles in fluid prose, while also affirming his status as a skillful creator of dazzling futuristic worlds. Though more time with the doomed Outbound Flight's passengers, who are the subject of Survivor's Quest, would round out the story, the book is nonetheless an enthralling page-turner sure to appeal to its target audience.

The light freighter Bargain Hunter moved through space, silver-gray against the blackness, the light of the distant stars reflecting from its hull. Its running lights were muted, its navigational beacons quiet, its viewports for the most part as dark as the space around it.

Its drive gunning for all it was worth.

“Hang on!” Dubrak Qennto barked over the straining roar of the engines. “Here he comes again!”

Clenching his teeth firmly together to keep them from chattering, Jorj Car’das got a grip on his seat’s armrest with one hand as he finished punching coordinates into the nav computer with the other. Just in time; the Bargain Hunter jinked hard to the left as a pair of brilliant green blaster bolts burned past the bridge canopy. “Car’das?” Qennto called. “Snap it up, kid.”

“I’m snapping, I’m snapping,” Car’das called back, resisting the urge to point out that the outmoded nav equipment was Qennto’s property, not his. As was the lack of diplomacy and common sense that had gotten them into this mess in the first place. “Can’t we just talk to them?”

“Terrific idea,” Qennto bit out. “Be sure to compliment Progga on his fairness and sound business sense. That always works on Hutts.”

The last word was punctuated by another cluster of blaster shots, this group closer than the last. “Rak, the engines can’t hold this speed forever,” Maris Ferasi warned from the copilot’s seat, her dark hair flashing with green highlights every time a shot went past.

“Doesn’t have to be forever,” Qennto said with a grunt. “Just till we have some numbers. Car’das?”

On Car’das’s board a light winked on. “Ready,” he called, punching the numbers over to the pilot’s station. “It’s not a very long jump, though—”

He was cut off by a screech from somewhere aft, and the flashing blaster bolts were replaced by flashing starlines as the Bargain Hunter shot into hyperspace.

Car’das took a deep breath, let it out silently. “This is not what I signed up for,” he muttered to himself. Barely six standard months after signing on with Qennto and Maris, this was already the second time they’d had to run for their lives from someone.

And this time it was a Hutt they’d frizzled. Qennto, he thought darkly, had a genuine talent for picking his fights.

“You okay, Jorj?”

Car’das looked up, blinking away a drop of sweat that had somehow found its way into his eye. Maris was swiveled around in her chair, looking back at him with concern. “I’m fine,” he said, wincing at the quavering in his voice.

“Of course he is,” Qennto assured Maris as he also turned around to look at their junior crewer. “Those shots never even got close.”

Car’das braced himself. “You know, Qennto, it may not be my place to say this—”

“It isn’t; and don’t,” Qennto said gruffly, turning back to his board.

“Progga the Hutt is not the sort of person you want mad at you,” Car’das said anyway. “I mean, first there was that Rodian—”

“A word about shipboard etiquette, kid,” Qennto cut in, turning just far enough to send a single eye’s worth of glower at Car’das. “You don’t argue with your captain. Not ever. Not unless you want this to be your first and last tour with us.”

“I’d settle for it not being the last tour of my life,” Car’das muttered.

“What was that?”

Car’das grimaced. “Nothing.”

“Don’t let Progga worry you,” Maris soothed. “He has a rotten temper, but he’ll cool off.”

“Before or after he racks the three of us and takes all the furs?” Car’das countered, eyeing the hyperdrive readings uneasily. That mauvine nullifier instability was definitely getting worse.

“Oh, Progga wouldn’t have racked us,” Qennto scoffed. “He’d have left that to Drixo when we had to tell her he’d snatched her cargo. You do have that next jump ready, right?”

“Working on it,” Car’das said, checking the computer. “But the hyperdrive—”

“Heads up,” Qennto interrupted. “We’re coming out.”

The starlines collapsed back into stars, and Car’das keyed for a full sensor scan.

And jerked as a salvo of blaster shots sizzled past the canopy.

Qennto barked a short expletive. “What the frizz?”

“He followed us,” Maris said, sounding stunned.

“And he’s got the range,” Qennto snarled as he threw the Bargain Hunter into another series of stomach-twisting evasive maneuvers. “Car’das, get us out of here!”

“Trying,” Car’das called back, fighting to read the computer displays as they bounced and wobbled in front of his eyes. There was no way it was going to calculate the next jump before even Qennto’s luck ran out and the fuming Hutt back there finally connected.

But if Car’das couldn’t find a place for them to go, maybe he could find all the places for them not to go . . .

The sky directly ahead was full of stars, but there was plenty of empty black between them. Picking the biggest of the gaps, he punched the vector into the computer. “Try this one,” he called, keying it to Qennto.

“What do you mean try?” Maris asked.

The freighter rocked as a pair of shots caught it squarely on the aft deflector. “Never mind,” Qennto said before Car’das could answer. He punched the board, and once again the starlines lanced out and faded into the blotchy hyperspace sky.

Maris exhaled in a huff. “That was too close.”

“Okay, so maybe he is mad at us,” Qennto conceded. “Now. Like Maris said, kid, what do you mean, try this one?”

“I didn’t have time to calculate a proper jump,” Car’das explained. “So I just aimed us into an empty spot with no stars.”

Qennto swiveled around. “You mean an empty spot with no visible stars?” he asked ominously. “An empty spot with no collapsed stars, or pre-star dark masses, or something hidden behind dust clouds? That kind of empty spot?” He waved a hand toward the canopy. “And out toward the Unknown Regions on top of it?”

“We don’t have enough data in that direction for him to have done a proper calculation anyway,” Maris said, coming unex- pectedly to Car’das’s defense.

“That’s not the point,” Qennto insisted.

“No, the point is that he got us away from Progga,” Maris said. “I think that deserves at least a thank-you.”

Qennto rolled his eyes. “Thank you,” he said. “Such thanks to be rescinded if and when we run through a star you didn’t see, of course.”

“I think it’s more likely the hyperdrive will blow up first,” Car’das warned. “Remember that nullifier problem I told you about? I think it’s getting—”

He was cut off by a wailing sound from beneath them, and with a lurch the Bargain Hunter leapt forward like a giffa on a scent.

“Running hot!” Qennto shouted, spinning back to his board. “Maris, shut ’er down!”

“Trying,” Maris called back over the wailing as her fingers danced across her board. “Control lines are looping—can’t get a signal through.”

With a curse, Qennto popped his straps and heaved his bulk out of his seat. He sprinted down the narrow aisle, his elbow barely missing the back of Car’das’s head as he passed. Poking uselessly at his own controls, Car’das popped his own strap release and started to follow.

“Car’das, get up here,” Maris called, gesturing him forward.

“He might need me,” Car’das said as he nevertheless reversed direction and headed forward.

“Sit,” she ordered, nodding sideways at Qennto’s vacated pilot’s seat. “Help me watch the tracker—if we veer off this vector before Rak figures out how to pull the plug, I need to know about it.”

“But Qennto—”

“Word of advice, friend,” she interrupted, her eyes still on her displays. “This is Rak’s ship. If there are any tricky repairs to be made, he’s the one who’ll make them.”

“Even if I happen to know more about a particular system than he does?”

“Especially if you happen to know more about it than he does,” she said drily. “But in this case, you don’t. Trust me.”

“Fine,” Car’das said with a sigh. “Such trust to be rescinded if and when we blow up, of course.”

“You’re learning,” she said approvingly. “Now run a systems check on the scanners and see if the instability’s bled over into them. Then do the same for the nav computer. Once we get through this, I want to make sure we can find our way home again.”

A decent prequel that doesn't quite measure up to the high bar set by its predecessors.
By Richard
A prequel to Timothy Zahn's popular Star Wars "Thrawn" trilogy (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, The Last Command), this story works to provide an origin story for the character Thrawn who is best known as being the Grand Admiral of the Empire who nearly defeated the fledgling New Republic after Return of the Jedi. Whereas the original Thrawn books were set after Return of the Jedi, this story is firmly set in the years in between the movies "Phantom Menace" and "Attack of the Clones".

The story focuses on three primary perspectives. The first is the perspective of a group of smugglers who stumble into Thrawn out in uncharted space. The second is the Jedi Master C'Baoth (who appeared in the old Thrawn trilogy) as he prepares and launches a deep space colonization mission titled Outbound Flight. The final perspective is from a henchman of Darth Sidious (Emperor Palpatine) who is trying to sabotage Outbound Flight. For the most part the story is well structured as the three plotlines slowly converge in a big climatic event. If you are like me and read the original Thrawn trilogy then the outcome won't really be in question, which sadly lessens the suspense.

Thrawn's portrayal is pretty solid throughout the book, he is at his best when he is dealing face to face with the smugglers where he can show his sophistication. In battle it is a little more mixed though, with the book struggling to show him as a strategic genius. Many of his battle plans hinge on a combination of unorthodox equipment and a heaping helping of luck.

C'Baoth's part of the story feels largely unnecessary, as we are introduced to an array of characters that we never see long enough to care about. These parts of the books seem like an overly drawn out exercise in showing what a jerk the guy was even before the original Thrawn trilogy.

The plotline of Darth Sidious and his henchmen serves primarily as a way to draw the Thrawn and C'Baoth plotlines together. In this regard it does its job well, introducing the necessary elements to move the plot forward without dwelling to long on it.

Being written after the prequel movies were made has allowed this book to tie in more closely to the events of the movies than the original Thrawn books could. The book takes advantage of this to try to even out C'Baoth's origin and make it mesh better with the Episode 1-3 versions of the Jedi Order. Thrawn's origin is welcome but feels somewhat incomplete, with many questions being left unanswered leaving potential sequel hooks for the future.

Overall the book is decent, but is far from a must read. Sadly this prequel book just couldn't quite fill the shoes left by its more compelling predecessors. The books open ending left things feeling to uncertain and unsatisfying.

Star Wars Legitimacy
By Amazon Customer
You will enjoy this novel if you are curious regarding the back-story of Thrawn, or if you enjoy the Star Wars universe but deplore the quality of writing rampant throughout.

Being of the latter persuasion, I picked this up based on Timothy Zahn's name alone. I generally have no interest in the side characters of Star Wars, and when I do, they are usually Jedi. This novel does not feature any Jedi per se. Lorana Jinzler, padawan of C'baoth is the only Jedi Zahn develops as more than a counterpoint to main characters. However, even her involvement is secondary to that of the Thrawn storyline.

If you are not familiar with Zahn's work, then the most important fact to realize is that Zahn understands his characters. The most common failing I witness in Star Wars novels is the lack of established personality in characters that have been richly developed by Lucas and others. When Zahn puts words in the mouth of Luke, Han, Leia, and the rest, they aren't cringe-inducing, unsophisticated and uncharacteristic. Zahn is not the only author to avoid this blunder, but his company is few.

Beyond that, Zahn also has a flair for the mechanics of story-telling. He doesn't "overplot" - the characters drive, and the plot is the terrain they maneuver through. At the same time (and to take the analogy further), Zahn doesn't set them down in a featureless expanse. There are twists and revelations that are a joy to uncover without being so overly complicated as to be distracting, nor are they so simple that they're self-evident and anti-climactic.

For criticism, I will say that Zahn (at least in this novel) barely goes beyond the surface when he writes of Jedi. For me, this didn't detract from the value of the story, but made me wonder what would the result be if Zahn truly threw himself into the intricacies of Jedi politics, the mysteries of the Force, and the moral implications of the balance of good and evil when physically embodied in superhuman agents. He does something similar with a minor antagonist species - they are a two-dimensional evil race that are given no redeeming qualities. However, my criticism there is debatable. I personally find it lazy when villains (even minor, somewhat unimportant ones) are purely evil and easily hated, but the Star Wars universe is rife with such simple archetypes. I have a preference, but I don't have an answer.

For those of you who haven't tackled "Heir to the Empire," I would recommend you start there. This novel is excellent, but definitely peripheral to his wonderful trilogy. For those who have enjoyed the trilogy, here's a bit more of a memorable character and a bit of Jedi heroism for seasoning.

Good, not great, yet worth it for Thrawn.
By NWLB
Outbound Flight is not the best of the Star Wars books by the author. It is now a non-cannon EU book which hints at future events in the EU and introduces the hugely popular character of “Thrawn.” For fans of Timothy Zahn’s “Thrawn” it is a fun adventure. The addition of Anakin and Obi-wan into the story almost seem without purpose given they have little to no real impact to the story. The pages might have been better used to create additional time with Thrawn. The main villain Jorus C’Both, seen in later Zahn novels, seems inconsistent and the conclusions to his and other stories feel a little rushed. This might have worked better as a three novel rather than a single volume story. Ponderous at times it is still a good read if only to learn more about Thrawn and the Chiss.

Buying a Better World: George Soros and Billionaire Philanthropy, by Anna Porter

The incredible, inside story of the man and the organization changing the way we change the world.

George Soros is well known as the legendary speculator who made a fortune betting against the British pound in 1992, but he is also a philanthropist who has spent billions in order to promote democracy around the world. Morton Abramowitz of the Carnegie Endowment for Peace once said that Soros was “the only private citizen with his own foreign policy.”

Anna Porter has interviewed Soros, his senior staff, journalists, politicians, and many others in an attempt to understand the man. Each person has a unique story to tell. Focusing on the last decade, she explores how Soros’s Open Society Foundations have spread his ideas of human rights, democracy, Western liberalism, and participatory capitalism around the globe. These are the ideas Soros has said he considers worth dying for. How have they translated into reality? What will his legacy be?

(Michael Harris, award-winning author of Party of One)

"Anna Porter's Kasztner's Train takes us to the magnificently researched and reconstructed world of Hungary during the twin fascist terrors of the Arrow Cross and the SS - to a world in which everything is in flux except the determination of Kasztner. Rome the Second Time: 15 Itineraries That Don't Go to the Coliseum, by Dianne Bennett, William Graebner

Designed for the tourist seeking a fresh, authentic, Roman experience, this intimate, stimulating guide explores Rome's splendid modern architecture, its bustling close-in neighborhoods, and its rivers, magnificent fountains, and aqueducts. Itineraries take the reader to Fascist and occupied Rome of World War II, the nearby Alban Hills, and the Eternal City's lesser-known green spaces. Innovative chapters feature cultural and artistic Rome, including art galleries, jazz clubs, film locations, and rooftop bars--even places that offer a sumptuous (and free) "vernissage" of wine and hors d'oeuvres. With Bill and Dianne as guides-their voices part of the experience-the curious traveler will discover a housing project built under Mussolini; ascend a little-known holy Roman road on the city's outskirts; spend an evening in the out-of-the-way, artsy neighborhood of Pigneto; enjoy a trattoria where only Italians eat; and, among the book's many informative, creative "sidebars," find in one the troubling story of Rome's Jewish community, and in another locate sites in "Angels & Demons." 16 maps, 70 photos, an index, and detailed directions and instructions (including websites) make this "new" Rome easily accessible. For the frugally-minded, at times adventurous (at times armchair) traveler. Foreword by Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni.

"The fact that Walter Veltroni, the highly respected mayor of Rome until 2008 has written a foreword to this guidebook should inspire confidence in the Transitions Abroad reader eager to see the Rome behind the "Disneyland" itineraries, jammed with exhausted tourists that countless other guidebooks describe...The authors take the reader through a number of itineraries, carefully explained and annotated with excellent maps." --Transitions Abroad(www.transitionsabroad.com)

"This book is geared to the traveler who has already seen the big sights - the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, Vatican City and so on - and is ready to experience the less traveled, quirkier and definitely cheaper side of Rome. In other words, the Rome of ordinary people." --Chicago Tribune, June Sawyers

"...if you're planning on staying in Rome for a while, or if you're coming back, there's a good argument that ROME THE SECOND TIME is the second guidebook you should buy....If you're going to be in Rome for long enough, or regularly enough, to get past those first fevered days between the Colosseum and the Vatican, you may well want to dip into ROME THE SECOND TIME, and see what it has to offer. It's also supported by their Website, called, well, Rome The Second Time." --www.romefile.com

"Most guidebooks are outdated by the time they reach the stores, but this one is different. Beautifully written, with an enthusiasm for the Eternal City that warms every page, it takes readers far off the beaten path, into neighborhoods where tourists seldom tread." --www.inromenow.com

"This book gives you a new insight into Rome. Itineraries and directions are well-written with interesting sidebars and stories about the sights. I enjoyed reading this book and am looking forward to using it next time I'm in Rome." --About.com, Martha Bakerjian (goitaly.com)

A Wonderul Way to Relive Roman Adventures
By Ronald M. Johnson
This was one of my very first Kindle books and did not disappoint. My expectation was that the Rome my wife and I had explored on different visits would come alive as I read. And that is exactly what happened. Armed with my old travel guides, and occasionally consulting Wiki entries on the old city, I was able to once again tramp through familiar sections of the city or spend time for the first time in locations that had eluded us on our trips. The Bennett/Graebner itineraries bring a special feel and voice to each site, a sense of being with old friends and enjoying sights in a new way. We would recommend this book to anyone who wants to go beyond the usual guidebooks and seek out unique neighborhoods, buildings, and natural settings that exist throughout Rome. Bennett and Graebner give the reader a much more complex and deeper meaning to the term "eternal city" as they take us on a journey through a city that few know as well as they do. Our goal now is to have the chance to follow their suggested tours in person and not just as an excellent read.

Rome the Second Time Is for First Timers Too
By M. Sargent
Rome The Second Time is designed for the return visitor who has seen the major tourist sights. Yet, it is also a perfect guide book for first timers like me who want to experience the city in a different and deeper way than is often possible in a brief stay. On my first trip to Rome I followed all or part of 6 itineraries included in the book (Rome and Its Aqueducts; Hitler and the Germans Come to Rome; On the Gionicolo; The Nazis and Fascists in Central Rome; The Architecture of Modernism and Fascism; An Evening in Pigneto). Thanks to Bennett and Graebner's excellent guide, I enjoyed every step and syllable.

The itineraries are detailed and easy to follow and took me to places I would never have found on my own. The sights selected introduce the
wayfarer to Rome's history, architecture, infrastructure, neighborhoods, politics and political movements, archaeology, ethnic and immigrant communities
high and popular art, night life, music scene, social classes, sports stadiums, schools and universities and much more. The commentaries describing the sights are lively and entertaining and explain succinctly the history and significance of what one is looking at. They tell us what to look for; what to see that we might miss otherwise.

Although I was not able to walk all 15 itineraries, the book guided me to an intense connection and bond with the city And reading it cover to cover on my return home helped me cope with feelings of Rome withdrawal and to anticipate and plan my second time. I highly recommend Rome the Second Time to first, second or tenth time visitors to Rome.

Lots of interesting facts about Rome
By Craig Serio
This book is peppered with interesting and fun facts about Rome and its recent and historical past. Some may find it a little heavy on the fascist regime info but if you plan on spending time venturing around some of the featured neighborhoods like the Jewish ghetto it can be a helpful reference guide. Most of the itineraries are good. May not be the best choice for the first time traveler to Rome but a good resource if you are going back and looking for little more variety to plan some personal walking tours.

Town, City, and Nation: England, 1850-1914 (O P U S), by Philip J. Waller

By the outbreak of the First World War, England had become the world's first mass urban society. In just over sixty years the proportion of town-dwellers had risen from 50 to 80 percent, and during this period many of the most crucial developments in English urban society had taken place. This book provides a uniquely comprehensive analysis of those developments - conurbations, suburbs, satellite towns, garden cities, and seaside resorts. Waller assesses the importance of London, the provincial cities, and manufacturing centers. He also examines the continuing influence of the small country town and "rural" England on political, economic, and cultural growth. Scholarly and readable, this book is a general social history of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century England, seen from an urban perspective.

A Digital Signal Processing Primer: With Applications to Digital Audio and Computer Music, by Ken Steiglitz

This text is directed at the market of DSP users brought about by the development of powerful and inexpensive software tools to analyze signals. These tools allow sophisticated manipulation of signals but do not provide an understanding of the theory or the foundation for the techniques. This work develops an approach to the development of the mathematics of DSP and uses examples from areas of the spectrum familiar to beginners, together with questions and suggested experiments

From the Inside Flap
Using computer technology to store, change, and manufacture sounds and pictures -- digital signal processing -- is one of the most significant achievements of the late twentieth century. This book is an informal, and I hope friendly, introduction to the field, emphasizing digital audio and applications to computer music. It will tell you how DSP works, how to use it, and what the intuition is behind its basic ideas. By keeping the mathematics simple and selecting topics carefully, I hope to reach a broad audience, including:

beginning students of signal processing in engineering and computer science courses; composers of computer music and others who work with digital sound; World Wide Web and internet practitioners, who will be needing DSP more and more for multimedia applications; general readers with a background in science who want an introduction to the key ideas of modern digital signal processing. We'll start with sine waves. They are found everywhere in our world and for a good reason: they arise in the very simplest vibrating physical systems. We'll see, in Chapter 1, that a sine wave can be viewed as a phasor, a point moving in a circle. This representation is used throughout the book, and makes it much easier to understand the frequency response of digital filters, aliasing, and other important frequency-domain concepts. In the second chapter we'll see how sine waves also arise very naturally in more complicated systems -- vibrating strings and organ pipes, for example -- governed by the fundamental wave equation. This leads to the cornerstone of signal processing: the idea that all signals can be expressed as sums of sine waves. From there we take up sampling and the simplest digital filters, then continue to Fourier series, the FFT algorithm, practical spectrum measurement, the z-transform, and the basics of the most useful digital filter design algorithms. The final chapter is a tour of some important applications, including the CD player, FM synthesis, and the phase vocoder. At several points I return to ideas to develop them more fully. For example, the important problem of aliasing is treated first in Chapter 3, then in greater depth in Chapter 11. Similarly, digital filtering is reexamined several times with increasing sophistication. This is why you should read this book from the beginning to the end. Not all books are meant to be read that way, but this one definitely is. Some comments about mechanics: All references to figures and equations refer to the current chapter unless stated otherwise. Absolutely fundamental results are enclosed in boxes. Each chapter ends with a Notes section, which includes historical comments and references to more advanced books and papers, and a set of problems. Read the problems over, even if you don't work them the first time around. They aren't drill exercises, but instead mention generalizations, improvements, and wrinkles you will encounter in practice or in more advanced work. A few problems suggest computer experiments. If you have access to a practical signal-processing laboratory, use it. Hearing is believing. Many people helped me with this book. First I thank my wife Sandy, who supports me in all that I do, and who helped me immeasurably by just being. For his generous help, both tangible and intangible, I am indebted to Paul Lansky, professor of music and composer at Princeton. The course on computer music that we teach together was the original stimulus for this book. I am indebted to many others in many ways. Perry Cook, Julius Smith, Tim Snyder, and Richard Squier read drafts with critical acumen, and their comments significantly improved the result. And I also thank, for assistance of various flavors, Steve Beck, Jack Gelfand, Jim Kaiser, Brian Kernighan, Jim McClellan, Gakushi Nakamura, Matt Norcross, Chris Pirazzi, John Puterbaugh, Jim Roberts, and Dan Wallach. Ken Steiglitz Princeton, N.J.

Accessible DSP Text geared for those interested in audio
By calvinnme
This is a different kind of digital signal processing textbook in just about every way. To begin with, chapter one starts out talking about sinusoids in the context of tuning forks, when just about every other DSP book under the sun starts with a review of linear systems. This is good, in that throughout the book your eye is kept on the ball of actual audio applications. This can be somewhat troublesome in that the author sometimes has to delve into mathematics that the typical DSP student may not be ready for - the wave equation and elementary partial differential equations for example. The author ultimately does get the job done, however, explaining the DFT, FFT, z-transform, and filter design all within the context of audio signals. It is true that only the last chapter is explicitly labeled "Audio and Musical Applications". However, this only means that the author is discussing complex applications in this chapter only, after the groundwork has been laid for all of the theory. I would especially recommend this book to people interested in computer music that need to get up to speed on DSP. Such students may also appreciate "DSP Filter Cookbook" by John Lane. It is all about the implementation of audio filters and contains C++ source code and schematics. If you are a traditional student of DSP and digital audio does not interest you, you might want to go a more traditional route starting out with "Understanding Digital Signal Processing" by Lyon and proceeding on to a more advanced text such as "Discrete Time Signal Processing" by Oppenheimer or "Digital Signal Processing: Principles, Algorithms and Applications" by Proakis.

great so far!
By Daniel Cogan
This book is nicely written. The author takes a step-by-step approach, building up the knowledge level of the reader slowly and clearly, so that later parts of the book are easier understood. I have only read the first couple chapters, but am happy so far. I never clearly understood some of the basic DSP concepts because they tended to be taught in college by professors who were either in a rush, or didn't fully understand how to teach the basics. I'm not going to say that the book makes it super simple - the fact is DSP requires a good handle on calculus and trig, but assuming the reader is willing to stop and think a while as to what is being said and what the math means, it's approached in an intuitive manner. The only thing I found myself wanting was an answer sheet for the questions at the end of the chapter. It would be nice to have a few problems worked out so I can get a deeper intuition for how to approach problems beyond the theory, but then again, I'm only in the second chapter.

great DSP introduction, focus on computer music
By P. Falstad
This is the only DSP book I would recommend for a beginner. This is an especially great book for someone without an EE background who doesn't know much about signals, or someone who doesn't know/care about analog filters. I found the book quite practical, and was able to implement working digital filters after reading it. But, it also gave me a good understanding of the theory.

I've gotten other DSP books since then, including the famed Oppenheim, and I've been rather disappointed with each of them. The book is a lot more readable and less abstract than the others.

I do wish this book covered more topics.. Some more specifics about Butterworth and Chebyshev filters would have been nice. If you just want sample code for building a filter, you won't get it.

However, this book covers some topics which I haven't seen covered well elsewhere, like comb filters, resonators, reverb, and digital simulation of a plucked string. So it's still worth getting even if you already know about DSP and have other books.
