Like Thomas Hardy, who created his fictional Wessex out of his native Dorset, and William Faulkner, who used Lafayette County, Mississippi, as the basis for his imaginary Yoknapatawpha County, O'Hara transformed his hometown of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, and its surrounding anthracite coal region into one of literature's great fictional landscapes. Setting five novels and more than 50 stories in what he called his "Pennsylvania Protectorate," O'Hara recorded with great honesty the lives of Gibbsville's inhabitants--from Polish coal miners and Irish Catholic shopkeepers to the Protestant country club set. Editor Bruccoli, who championed O'Hara as one of America's great short writers in his biography The O'Hara Concern ( LJ 9/15/75), has gathered into one volume 55 Gibbsville stories written over a 30-year span. Included are some of O'Hara's most famous tales, including "The Doctor's Son," "Imagine Kissing Pete," and "The Bucket of Blood." Since many of these stories are drawn from previous collections, libraries already owning such anthologies as The Collected Stories of John O'Hara ( LJ 4/15/85) might want to consider this an optional purchase. Otherwise, this is an excellent introduction to a writer who has been unjustly ignored.

Quite a Collection!

I am from O'Hara's Collieryville and can recall English / Literature teachers in high school saying: There's not a John O'Hara among the lot of you!

Well, who was/is John O'Hara, why should I care, and if he's so great why aren't we reading his stuff in class? All good questions with very good answers when you get into this collection which contains some first-class 'adult' themes which clearly kept John out of the school library!

This is a collection of short stories. One of my favorite genres. Sometimes the story is so short it can end in 17 or even fewer pages and be finished like the slam of a door or leave you wandering down your own 'what if' trails. Continuing some of these to 200+ would be a disservice to storyline and reader alike.

This collection is a great look at the Schuylkill County coal region during the period my grandparents grew up in and during the younger days of my parents. The argot is spot on if yiz know wut I mean.

The chararcters are human. Perhaps too human at times. The era is just after the Great War and into the Great Depression. It opens with a longish story set during the time of the Spanish Flu pandemic and is just too real at times. I can actually visualize many of the roads travelled, literally, and see the locales under discussion even if many of them were mostly ruins when I was younger. This helps bring alive the stories from many relatives as to what a 'swell place' this used to be to hang out.

I'm hooked. I'm looking for more O'Hara and plan to start on this guy called Updike. I advise you to join the reading party if you like true realism in literature from that period. It's better than F. Scott Fitzgerald IMO.

John O'Hara deserves to be more widely known. Nobody writes conversational English better than O'Hara. Excellent writing, good yarns and memorable characters in a small town that could be anywhere. Excellent.

An American great

John O'Hara captured a snapshot of a time and place and preserved it in the pages of his stories. His writings are of great interest to me as they are set in the coal region of Northeast PA where I live. O'Hara's writing is crisp and his depiction of life in small patch towns spot on. The characters are unforgettable. He was a genius.

About the Author

Dianna Kenny is a Professor of Psychology and a Professor of Music at the University of Sydney, Australia. She was the Founding Director of the Australian Centre for Applied Research in Music Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney, a post she held for five years. Dianna is interested in interdisciplinary research and has combined her own disciplines of psychology and music to progress the scientific study of music performance anxiety. Dianna has published widely in both disciplines, and has over 200 books, edited books, book chapters, journal articles, monographs and commissioned reports.

BEWARE! Enter the glamorous world of the classical musician at your own risk!

Dr Kenny's impeccably researched study of performance anxiety amongst musicians reveals a world populated by some very tortured souls.
This is not your usual 'self-help' book and any reader expecting "the ten easy steps to..." approach should probably look elsewhere. Kenny makes extensive use of pre-existing clinical studies and literature - the bibliography runs to over 40 pages! She also details the results of her own extensive 'fieldwork' in the form of transcriptions of numerous interviews with mostly professional orchestral players. It is this rigorous combination of data that led me to the conclusion that this is the most comprehensive and exhaustive study of music performance anxiety published in the last decade.
As a professional musician, I found the last two chapters of the book the most interesting and valuable. The reader hears the musicians speaking freely about their struggles with performance anxiety and thankfully these raw and personal accounts offer many positive strategies for coping with its often debilitating effects. I doubt many of these hardened professionals would speak this frankly to their collegues, students or spouses about their everyday battles with the stress of performing in a profession generally viewed as glamourous and joyful.

I would highly recommend this book to all musicians(professionals and amateurs), psychologists, psychiatrists, teachers and parents. It unashamedly lifts the curtain on an unseen and sometimes distressing occupational hazard and identifies many of its causes. Most optimistically, Kenny has utilised the experiences of sufferers to help develop effective treatments to manage the condition. Hopefully, these strategies should help restore the "exhilarating opportunities and enjoyment that performing music affords".

Wow! Music performance anxiety explained

What a timely and needed book on a subject about which very little scholarly light has shone! Dianna Kenny's book is excellent because it has wide appeal - to music researchers, psychologists, musicians and students. This book really explains for the first time the sometimes incomprehensible fears of talented and capable musicians. Kenny provides very comprehensive reviews of the nature of anxiety and performance anxiety (thus making the book very relevant not only to musicians but to psychologists as well) before honing in on the specific issues related to anxiety and music performance. The last two chapters speak directly to musicians in a very compelling way. We learn in the preface, in a passing comment, that Kenny herself suffered from severe music performance anxiety. Her first hand experience has given this first class academic the edge in researching this difficult topic and explaining it to others.

Page Numbers????!!

This is a great resource, but the kindle version does not include page numbers. That is extremely aggravating when writing papers that need the sources cited. Also, it is extremely tiresome to try and figure out the ratio of locations to page numbers, especially since there is not a code to go by. UGGGGHHHH!
