A Mystery with Many Surprises

The Case of the Lame Canary

A woman has urgent business with Perry Mason. Rita Swaine brought along a caged canary with a sore foot. She tells Perry about the problem her twin sister has with her new husband Walter Prescott, and the money he has taken from her sister Rosalind. Rosalind has been seeing her old boyfriend Jimmy Driscoll, and Rosalind's husband has threatened her. Rita explains the problem that happened that morning. The case intrigues Perry, so he agrees to take the case. Rita tells of an accident that happened around noon. Perry calls Paul Drake to investigate Walter Prescott, his business associate, the snoopy neighbors, and the man injured in that accident. Perry learns of trouble at the Prescott home (Chapter Three). Perry and Paul question the neighbors about the accident, and learn the homicide squad was at the Prescott house. The dialogue is an interesting as some trial scenes (Chapter Four).

The man injured in the accident has left the hospital, and can't be located. Perry and Paul visit Harry Trader, who drove the truck that was in that accident. Trader will tell them little, except it was the other driver's fault (Chapter Five). Perry and Della Street fly to Reno to locate Rita Swaine. They also find Rosalind Prescott and Jimmy Driscoll. Perry gets the complete story from Rosalind. Della calls to warn about the police, so Perry can call the telephone operator to report their presence. Perry gives good advice to his clients (Chapter Seven). Paul Drake tracks down "Carl Packard", who was injured in that accident; he can't be found. Perry learns he was an insurance detective who investigated fire-bugs connected with an arson ring (Chapter Eight)!

The Coroner holds an inquest and establishes that Walter Prescott was murdered with a pistol, the bullets came from Jimmy Driscoll's gun that was left with Rosalind Prescott (Chapter Ten). This makes Rita Swaine the last person in the house when Walter Prescott was alive. Now Rita tells Perry more about what happened that day. She found Walter Prescott dead when she arrived after Rosalind and Jimmy had left the house! Perry will have a difficult job defending Rita; she withheld evidence from the police. Perry gives her good advice as to her conduct in jail. Paul Drake calls Perry to tell him "Carl Packard" has been found, but will never testify in court.

In Chapter Fourteen Perry tries to imagine what could have happened. Paul Drake drops in to tell that Rita has confessed to what she found when she arrived at the Prescott house. When Perry learns that Walter Prescott's secretary is moving to Reno he comes up with an idea involving the shipping of luggage from Rita Swaine's apartment! This brings out Sergeant Holcomb to investigate. The Coroner holds another inquest into Jason Braun's death. One witness says he wants to leave because he was injured. Perry makes a suggestion, so Dr. Wallace examines a witness on the stand. A commotion breaks out, and a shocking surprise results. Perry's client will be released (Chapter Fifteen). Perry explains it all to Della Street while driving to the harbor for a well-deserved vacation. [The solution reminds me of Graham Greene's "The Third Man".]

This project illustrates the pros and cons of working within the DC universe. After decades of appearing in multiple comics, the DC superheroes have accumulated such complicated personal histories, it's difficult to do a new story that acknowledges relevant past experiences and simultaneously copes with present crises. Trying to revitalize sales of the most recent version of Supergirl, writer David resurrected the original version (Kara Zoe-El, Superman's blonde Kryptonian cousin) and dropped her next to the contemporary Supergirl (Linda Danvers, brunette Earthling). Both are gorgeous, and the many panels displaying them in skimpy spandex outfits are droolworthy. However, David's avowed purpose is to contrast Kara's sweet, klutzy naivete with Linda's more jaded adolescent angst. This aspect of the story works, especially when the more scientifically informed Linda patiently corrects Kara's assumptions about the extent of her superpowers. Working against this genial mood is the fact that a Supergirl eventually will have to die as part of DC's major megastory from 15 years ago, Crisis on Infinite Earths. Also, David feels constrained to use more characters from the DC stock company, including gleeful villain Xenon, who's having a fine time killing Supergirls one by one. And so the plot spins along, ransacking the career of Superman and company for events to stitch together and reinterpret in a fresh light. It's all ingenious but ultimately shallow. There's only so much lore that average readers can keep handy in memory, and this story line requires more than all but Supergirl loyalists can supply.

Too Revealing

Nice story, great art. Cannot give it 5 stars as it is a bit lewd. The outfits are too revealing, this is standard now with both D. C. and Marvel. Comics would sell without pushing the sex and the audience would again be appropriate for kids. When I grew up in the late 60's and 70's comics were more modest and kids loved them. The target audience it seems now must be older teens and adults. A shame really. (At least in the movies they are not as crude).

A great read.

OK so yet another DC story in which they put two different incarnations of a character against each other. DC has done this many times before in various time/reality bending stories. And yet as with many things about super hero comics Peter David simply does it better. Whereas many of these stories are little more than having a good laugh at the silver age's expense, PAD does more than that. He shows that super hero comics have matured as a genre and even an art form, but also, that in that growth, has maybe lost something. Something special, something fun, something pure. Perhaps in an age of MAX and Vertigo, a little silver age innocence once in a while wouldn't hurt us.

And as always PAD really shines when it comes to characterization. I went into this knowing very little about the Linda Danvers Supergirl. She was an Earth girl bonded with the alien matrix Supergirl and then something about an angel...or something. But her confusing origin aside within a few pages I felt like I knew her as a person.

A must read for any Peter David fan.

A superhuman story that is surprisingly touching

Peter David is often regarded as one of the best writers in comics, and there is good reason for that. He spent years writing the Incredible Hulk for Marvel (and still remains the best writer to ever tackle the character), and with this final arc for the old Supergirl series for DC, David takes his love for the classic pre-Crisis age stories and infuses them with a modern edge. Linda Danvers is the brunette, blonde-wig wearing earth bound Supergirl who now finally has the respect of her fellow super heroes and she has a grip on her life now as well. Naturally, none of it lasts long. Out of the sky comes blonde haired, cheery, and naive Kara Zor-El, claiming to be Superman's cousin Supergirl. What neither girl knows is that reality is being played around with, and that Kara is destined to die in the penultimate battle from Crisis on Infinite Earths. I don't want to go into anymore because the story that develops is surprisingly touching and offers up some even more surprises to boot. Not to mention that Ed Benes' (Birds of Prey) gorgeous pencil work conjures up some truly drool worthy interpretations of the female form. Because the title never really sold all that well, Many Happy Returns ended up being the final arc for the title, which is all the more fitting a send off. Much like Clark Kent learns in the final frames of the last pages, new readers will learn that this was a book that was often misunderstood by many, but loved by a dedicated few. Forget the relaunched Supergirl title (first by Jeph Loeb in the pages of Superman/Batman) and check this out, you won't regret it.

About the Author
Laszlo Kurti is a faculty member in the Department of Biochemistry at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas (http://kurtilabs.com). He received his diploma from the University of Debrecen, Hungary, where he conducted research in the laboratory of Professor Sandor Antus. Subsequently he received is MS degree at the University of Missouri-Columbia working with Professor Michael Harmata, and his Ph.D. degree (2006) in synthetic organic chemistry under the supervision of Professor Amos B. Smith III (the University of Pennsylvania). From 2006-2010, he was a Damon Runyon Cancel Fellow in the group of Professor E.J. Corey at Harvard University.

Barbara Czakó was born and raised in Hungary. She received her Diploma from Lajos Kossuth University in Debrecen, Hungary (now University of Debrecen). She obtained her Master of Science degree at University of Missouri-Columbia. Currently she is pursuing his Ph.D. degree in synthetic organic chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Gary A. Molander at the University of Pennsylvania.

Great Read as well as reference

Let me preface this review with: I have a huge library of chemistry related books, of which books relating to name reactions has a prominent footprint. With that said, this is one of the most readable of its kind. Before this, I enjoyed the Jie-Jack Li name reaction book. However, as with all of them, it was just a reference manual. Kurti's, however, is a well thought out "text" with background on each reaction and color coded mechanisms. It is an excellent book for both beginners and PI's. Sick as it may sound, I actually purchsed a second copy for home as well as the office. My conclusion is that this is one of maybe 3 name reaction books that make a complete reference set.

Outstanding but don't buy the CD-ROM version if you have Windows 7 64-bit

The book is an outstanding work of scholarship and I completely agree with EJ Corey's review. The coverage of the 250 named reactions, especially the background, explanations, and supporting literature is encyclopedic. The presenation of the information is excellent, but suffers from a major problem.

Unless you have access to a 32-bit machine DO NOT purchase this version. MicroSoft offers a patch that Windows 7 (64-bit) users can download to enable software products written for XP and Vista to be run. I've had mixed success with getting the patch to run these older software apps in the 64 bit environment.

The bottom line is: Buy the paperback version at half the cost of this edition, or make friends with a Vista or XP machine owner.

I checked with Amazona and Elsevier for warnings about this compatibility issue. Both companies admitted that none had been made public. The IT help group at Elsevier were, of course, aware of the issue but offered no different solutions than downloading the MS patch.

The North Country...

The Milepost costs about 35 dollars in a bookstore (cheaper on Amazon) and weights in at a little over 700 pages. What are you getting for your money? Well, Alaska is the journey of a lifetime for most visitors. Real wilderness is only half an hour from downtown Anchorage, the entry point for many travelers. In fact, Alaska and Northwest Canada offer an unsurpassed opportunity to experience a pre-urban world of rugged country, covered with forests, streams, lakes, mountains, tundra, glaciers, and lots of wildlife, where the traveler can spend hours or days out of sight of his or her fellow humans. The opportunities for outdoor adventure, whether hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, skiing, snow machining, dog sledding, fishing or hunting, are simply fantastic.

So why is The Milepost so valuable to this experience? Alaska and Northwest Canada have far less tourist infrastructure than what travelers may be used to in the lower '48 states or lower Canada. Gas stations, restaurants, and places to sleep may be few and far between, and what there is fills up quickly. Planning ahead is a great way to ensure a good experience, and the Milestone is just the planning resource that most visitors need.

Invaluable Travel Guide

I bought The Milepost for my recent trip to Alaska. I rented a car and drove from Anchorage to Homer to Seward to Whittier and back to Anchorage. 760 miles. Basically, the entire Kenai Peninsula. The Milepost was invaluable to me. It gave very specific directions, explained the highways, and highlighted places to stop on the way. I thought it was a better travel guide than others out there. Please note, it is a huge and weighty volume. I didn't carry the whole thing with me because I was flying to Alaska, and I didn't need the whole book. Instead, I removed the pages that pertained to my trip and took them with me. Once you purchase The Milepost, you can access it online and download it to one of your devices. I did download it to my tablet, but still took the pages because I wanted to be sure I had access to the information.Enjoy your trip! Alaska is beautiful!

We received it today, and have already spent a while looking at it planning our trip north this summer! Packed full of great info as always! It has been 4 years since we made the trip, and I know that things are always changing, it's great to have an updated source of info all in one spot.
