Pat Frank (1908–1964) is the author of the classic postapocalyptic novel Alas, Babylon, as well as the Cold War thriller Forbidden Area. Before becoming an author, Frank worked as a journalist and also as a propagandist for the government. Lots of typos

There are many typos in the Kindle version of this book. I own a copy in print but wanted the transportability of the Kindle. By 28 percent of the way I have already found 3-5 typos, and I am not even reading out loud. "I now your going to stay up to meet the plane..." should be "I know your going..."

The other typos are just as obvious. It seems like nobody proofed the Kindle version.

Now, 2 days later I have finished the book and the number of typos is astonishing. Sometimes there are 2 to 4 on a page. I'm guessing all told there are between 60 and 90 typos. It looks like the print version was OCRed, but not proofed. "the" turns into "He", "y"s become "v"s, "f"s turn into "r"s and so on. Some typos go beyond simple substitution, "ten or twenty" becomes "tenor twenty","can lay down", morphs into "can he down." There's even an error in the last sentence of the book. I can figure it all out but it distracts from the read.

The content I like, a lot,(A+). The typos just seem like sloppy work; i.e., the execution is poor (F). You may enjoy the book provided shoddy, just good enough production doesn't put you off.

Great book bad e-book

I don't generally write reviews, but I feel compelled to do so in this particular instance.

Alas, Babylon is the story of the survivors of a post-apocalyptic nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union. It primarily follows the story of Randy Bragg who becomes the leader of a small band of survivors and eventually the protector and leader of the entire town of Fort Repose Florida. Readers of post-apocalyptic fiction will recognize many of the themes and archetypes. Alas, Babylon is unique because it is one of the books that established those ideas particularly relating to atomic era apocalypses. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in post-apocalyptic fiction or who enjoys a character examination through the guise of the end of the world.

The reason why I gave this so few stars is not because of the book, but the Kindle edition is simply terrible. I have read many books on the Kindle and this is by far the worst proofreading job I have ever seen. Either the publisher or Amazon should be ashamed to be selling something of such poor quality. There is probably at least 2 to 3 errors on every page it's quite annoying.

Loved the Book, But do Yourself a Favor... Get the Paperback

Loved the book, hesitated to purchase it because I thought it would be terribly dated, but I did not find that to be the case. Reminded me a lot of One Second After, which of course was written much more recently.

As much as I loved this book, I do not recommend buying the kindle edition at all. There are a LOT of errors. It looks like they used OCR to scan a paper version of this book, and the original font didn't take well. I have seen this before in other Kindle books, but this is the worst I have seen. Very distracting and confusing to have to go back and try to figure out what was said. One sentence started with "We Ye...." after reading a couple of times I realized it was probably supposed to say "We've...". Even the last sentence of the book "The engine started and Randy turned away to face die thousand-year light". "Die" should of been "the". There are so many spelling and flat out misinterpreted words it is very distracting to say the least. Really wish I had read s hard copy of this one... or better yet, that the Kindle version wasn't so overrun with errors.

Perfect! Just needs a new box

I have been flipping through them and I love them. Very useful and concise scenarios. Make the flow of diagnoses easy to remember. Only thing is that they're so tightly boxed I'm sometimes struggle to not bend them when tugging them out of the box

Go buy the real cards

I had assumed that this would be a collection of digital flash cards. It is not. It's a mishmash of flashcards as a continuous "book." It is not useful as a study tool, however the information is still good and the table of contents and index are useful, so it gets 2 stars instead of 1.

Just buy the real cards.

The content is excellent. I like the quick 1 liner for treatment/plan. The thickness of the paper is great (I don't have to worry that it'll tear during my multiple usage. Only thing is that there are no histology images/CT or anything like that.

Almost any dictionary that you buy of this brand Langenscheidt is of excellent quality. It's modern, with clear examples, it includes pronunciation and grammatic help. Very few pictures or images.

Sloppy work

There are problems with this book. It purports to teach you how to ask questions, but gives hardly any information about understanding answers. But worse, it doesn't give honest translations and so can lead to misunderstandings. For instance, if you want to ask "Is this seat taken?" the German words they actually give you mean "Is this seat free?" -- exactly the opposite meaning. If you think you will be able to sit down if you hear the word, "Nein," you will sit down when you have been told not to, thus looking like a total jerk.

Other translations could be cleaner. For "Do you understand?" the translation should be "Verstehen Sie?" Instead, they give you words that mean "Have you understood?" (Haben Sie verstanden). That's kind of okay, but unnecessarily complicated -- besides not being an actual translation.

This random freedom makes it impossible to construct your own sentences using ones in the phrase book as a model. Once I began to spot these oddities, it made me very nervous about trusting other phrases in the book.

As to organization, it's okay if you plan to go to a doctor's office or to complain about your meal in a restaurant. The little "info" paragraphs sprinkled through the book are a nice touch. The inside cover has "essentials" of hello, goodbye, yes, no, etc.; but the phrase I used most on my recent trips was "I'm sorry, I don't understand German." That one isn't on the inside cover. It would have been useful for the book to include several blank pages for you to write your own essential phrases, because your needs will be unique.

Even though I found the phrasebook to be pretty bad, the Langenscheidt dictionary seems pretty good, although it has words the normal tourist clearly doesn't need (the German word for G-string is string) and leaves some more useful words out.

My other reference materials are Pimsleur's German lessons and Frommer's phrase book (which includes helpful words to use during sex!). I vastly prefer these. While Frommer's is a little larger than Langenscheidt and will challenge your pocket, its printing is much clearer and it has a much easier pronunciation guide. It purports to include a dictionary, but you'd be better off with a real one that has lots of words.

A Natural Philosopher's Diary

Five stars may be too many for this early volume in the Annie Dillard canon. It makes demands on the reader that are similar to those faced by a teacher reading a gifted student's term paper: The book is dazzling but it's also disorienting, like a travel adventure without a map. Still, it's a book that changes how the reader sees the world, and for that it gets highest marks.

This is a fairly easy book to read but a tough one to get through. It is simultaneously nature study, personal diary, Scripture commentary, mystical theology, field observation manual, and blank-verse poem. Annie Dillard was just age 27 when she wrote Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, and it is very much a young writer’s book, poetic and enthusiastic. Such strengths are also weaknesses: at times the poetry can be a bit ornate, and the multitude of facts can be daunting. Still, there are significant rewards in this book, if the reader, like a seasoned traveler, is willing to follow the author wherever she goes.

How far will we be going? The word “pilgrim” in the title suggests a long-distance trek to a holy place. But when we start the first chapter, we find Dillard already at a creekside cabin in Virginia , where she will stay for a year. If we’re to join her as pilgrims, we seem to at the destination without even setting out. Notice, though, that she calls her cabin an anchorite’s hermitage. Studying and writing by night, silently watching by day, she is more hermit than pilgrim. For Dillard and her readers, the journey in this book won’t be measured in miles. The road we’re on goes inward.

How strenuous is this going to be? Dillard answers this one with a story from Genesis, the one where Jacob wrestles with God on the bank of a stream. The contest goes on all night. Like Jacob, Dillard waits by a stream, and for one strenuous page after another, she wrestles with creation and its workings. We watch horrified as an outsized water bug liquefies a frog, as mother insects devour their freshly-laid eggs, as reindeer are driven mad by clouds of flies. This will not be an easy trip.

What will we see along the way? Before we can answer that, we have to confront a key fact about Creation: It may seem like an extravagant, intricate machine, set in motion and then left to run on its own; but it really resembles, once everything is examined carefully, a thought, a series of ideas made real. There is Mind behind what we see. Much of the book explores all the amazing stuff that there is in the world. Say what you will, the Creator loves variety and loves “Pizzaz.”

But what’s the reward for finishing the journey? Death is what awaits us, of course; Life seems to require it, making room for what’s next. So, what will we do when we get there, with all we’ve seen along the way of pizzaz but also of blood and destruction? Here’s Dillard in the final chapter: “I think that the dying pray at the last not ‘please,’ but ‘thank you,’ as a guest thanks his host at the door.”

Along with naturalist Edwin Way Teale who wrote four books about his and his wife's 100,000-mile journey that crisscrossed America and its seasons, Annie Dillard is one of my favorite American nature writers. Her portraits are much more intimate than Teale's continent-spanning murals. She is a miniaturist who painted scenes from nature that have stayed in my memory for all the decades since I first read this Pulitzer-prize winning book.

Annie Dillard does not use pastels. Many of her scenes are painted in blood--'Nature red in tooth and claw' as another poet would have it. Read the first scene in "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek" where the author wakes to find her "body covered with paw prints in blood" and see if you can put this book down without reading further...or read the scene with the frog that didn't leap away at her approach:

"He was a very small frog with wide, dull eyes. And just as I looked at him, he slowly crumpled and began to sag. The spirit vanished from his eyes as if snuffed. His skin emptied and drooped; his very skull seemed to collapse and settle like a kicked tent..."

The whole book is filled with miniatures from Dillard's pilgrimage at Tinker's Creek. It shouldn't be read through at one gulp, but savored slowly like a medieval Book of Hours.

One of My Favorite Books of All Time

Annie Dillard is not a light read. Her writing and her thinking are dense and multi-layered. She is a philosophical and spiritual pilgrim attempting to make sense of what IS through the natural world. In a memoir set in rural Virginia and told over a year's time in the natural world, she explores such spiritual questions as: why is there violence and horror in the world along with great beauty; how do we find God in the violence and darkness; is the world designed. Let me state firmly that this is not a strictly Christian text, although my devoutly Christian friends have enjoyed it as much as I have. Readers of other spiritual paths, however, will find plenty of food for fodder in questions about the universe; and, I should add, the book can be read on many levels. I'm currently leading a discussion of this book incorporating in-depth explorations of both the philosophies Dillard references and the questions about evolution that arise from it. It took us a month just to get through the first two chapters -- lots of meat for discussion and thought. Dillard approaches her arguments through her observations of the natural world, each of which is then explored in the abstract. It's behooves the reader to follow her many allusions -- truly enhances the reading experience. I have been reading and teaching this text for 25 years and have yet to tire of it.

For forty-five years Hawayo Takata carried in her hands—literally—the energy of one of the world’s great healing arts which she called Reiki. She shared this knowledge with hundreds of students and treated thousands of sufferers during her long career as teacher and practitioner of Reiki Healing.

Her path and mine converged in the early Fall of 1973 when she traveled from her island home in Hawaii to teach a class on another island, this one off the Northwest coast of the State of Washington. I was one of thirty students in that class, and when this small Oriental woman stood before the class and said firmly, “Reiki means Universal Life Energy and we were are all composed of this energy. Everyone can use this energy for healing—and I can teach you how!” I knew she had the answers for which I had been searching.

This had been a long and diligent quest of more than seventeen years, one motivated by my need to understand more fully what had occurred in my life with a profound spiritual experience, a transformational event which even now I can describe inadequately only as “mystical.”

My conventional Christian rearing had not prepared me to comprehend nor cope with the energy which was spontaneously released as a result of this experience, and I found little comfort to help within the structure of my church. Instead, books began to gravitate to me and in the writings of the mystics, ancient and contemporary, I found validation for what had happened. The teachings of Jesus took on new depth and meaning in my life, and the way was opened for me to seek more answers in the study of the world’s great religions, in theology, philosophy, psychology, parapsychology, and in science, especially the “new physics.”

I read the popular literature on healing and healers and attended workshops and lectures on this subject. I sat in meetings with some of the world’s renowned spiritual healers, and I learned much about healing; yet no one seemed able to give me direction or assistance in utilizing my own abilities until Mrs. Takata stated clearly that September evening: “. . .I can teach you how!”—and she did. With my Reiki Healing training, the search was completed and this became the pivotal moment when my life began to change beyond imagining.

In her visits to the Pacific Northwest I came to know Hawayo Takata both as teacher and as friend, and when in 1980 she asked me to write her life story with Reiki, I was honored to do so. Before the manuscript was completed she made her transition, and the project was put aside temporarily, although I knew at the appropriate time my promise to her would be fulfilled.

In addition to those Masters initiated by Mrs. Takata in her lifetime, many more have since been trained to carry on this work. I am privileged to be among them. To the Masters and to the thousands of students who now carry Reiki Healing to the world, I offer this gift from Reiki Master Hawayo Takata.

A MUST for those interested in Reiki

There are many books on Reiki and some tell of uncovered secrets and some tell of More Power. Takata's "Story of Reiki" is sincere and from the Heart which is where Reiki SHOULD BE. You can feel the warmth through the words and gather a sense of Knowing that this is "The Way". As a Reiki Master I use this book in my Reiki class work and in lectures. Why don't YOU read this story and you decide. Very quick reading. It also tells in the last section of Takata's clinic and some of the Miracles that took place. If you practice Reiki you will be able to related to this book. If you don't practice Reiki and are interested in Healing work, you will probably began your search for a Reiki Master / Teacher. ENJOY!!!

A great introduction to Reiki!

I am a practicing Reiki Master in the Sacramento area, and have read many books on Reiki, becoming more confused along the way.
Reading this book and Living Reiki, coupled with my own direct experience of Reiki, brought home to me again how simple yet powerful Reiki is, and highlighted the fact that some physical problems take a bit longer to heal and require quite a few Reiki sessions.
This eloquent book is void of new-age thinking, chakra balancing, and the use of Reiki symbols: It brings home the fact that all that is needed is to be attuned to Reiki and then place one's hands on the body in order to start the healing process, in oneself or another, and that chronic conditions will take longer to right themselves.
Four months ago I started daily Reiki sessions, several a day lasting one-half hour, on a friend of mine diagnosed with terminal liver cancer and given only weeks to live. The cancer is almost totally gone and the terminal diagnois has been lifted. Chemotherapy side-effects were kept at minimum, and once I started Reiki, my friend never again experienced pain.
For my new students and those unaccquainted with Reiki, this little book is a great and inspiring introduction to what Reiki is and the incredible things that Reiki can do.

Good tips

Here are some of the types of monsters that this book covers: cult classic monsters, Robotic monsters, aliens, Godzilla-styles monsters, humanoid monsters, plant monsters, and sea monters. This book covers basic tips, such as the box form to use and there are lots of examples. In the beginning, the tutorial on drawing cult classic monsters were really good. I like that part the best. The authors start off using basic body forms and guiding you through the steps. But as we turn to the later part of the book, the steps are truncated and the authors merely point out the sketches.
The main reason for knocking one point off the rating is because this is NOT for beginners. People who are considering this book should have a good feel for drawing shapes and anatomy. This book also assume you know the workings on perspective and shading, as well as how to detail and adding effects.
The drawings are from the studio of Antartic Press, which also produce such comics as "Gold Diggers," "Warrior Nun Areala" and the "How to Draw Manga" series. The artists present a mostly Manga and Japanese Anime feel to it. Inspiring artists who wanted to get a glimpse at AP's studio style should consider this book.

Great book, great for kids wanting to draw. I agree with everything from the above review.

I do want to mention that this is a black and white book, no final colored illustration like MOST drawing books. I really wanted to see what the colored pictures look like that's why I took off a point b/c the illustrations are fantastic and inspiring.

About the Author
Anthony Giddens, former director of the London School of Economics and a current member of the House of Lords, is a world-renowned social theorist who has written over forty books. He has written on just about every major topic in sociology but is best known for his work on modernization theory and globalization.

Mitchell Duneier is an award-winning urban ethnographer at Princeton University and the City University of New York Graduate Center. He is most famous for his book Sidewalk, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Duneier's research focuses on the urban poor and other groups in the margins of society.

Richard P. Appelbaum, the MacArthur chair of Global Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has won several awards for his teaching and works mainly on globalization and labor issues. Appelbaum is the coauthor of Behind the Label.

Deborah Carr is a demographer and an active teacher at Rutgers University, where she regularly teaches the intro course. Her work focuses on sociology of the life course, aging, social psychology, and gender. Carr's latest book, Worried Sick: How Stress Hurts Us and How to Bounce Back, looks at how stress gets under our skin, makes us sick, and how and why people cope with stress differently.

Great Substitute textbook for the most recent edition.

This book was purchased as a textbook for a college Sociology class. The book was the version prior to the current textbook, but other than some more current statistics, this book filled the need. This textbook was amazing because of the significant reduction in price. The book was in fair condition.
